Operative [Signalling Maintenance] – Peterborough Spital House

Operatives can specialise in a range of disciplines but for this role you’ll become a specialist in Signalling & Telecoms. You’ll be working with equipment including signals that control when trains can run, level crossings, and points systems. With your willingness to learn, you’ll develop a huge range of technical skills across a range of manual, electrical and digital equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and inspect signalling equipment, ensuring safe operation of trains.
  • Support the team in maintaining equipment and provide lookout duties to keep the whole team safe.
  • Transport kit across tricky terrain and work outdoors in all weather conditions, day, night, week or weekend.
  • Work safely and effectively next to moving trains travelling at high speed.

Required Skills and Traits

  • Team‑working: work closely with the maintenance team to deliver safe and efficient work delivery.
  • Communication: good communication skills to work safely and effectively.
  • Proactive planning: be punctual, have the van and equipment ready and anticipate the needs of the team.
  • Working under pressure: remain calm when trains pass close by and work outdoors in all weather.
  • Following rules and instructions: understand rules, respect them, and challenge unsafe situations.
  • Willingness to learn: consistently develop skills and keep up to date with standards and procedures.

Working Conditions

  • Shift pattern: days, nights, weekends.
  • Outdoor working: work outside in all weathers.
  • Safe working: subject to drug and alcohol testing, medical assessment and BPSS pre‑employment checks.
  • Driving: category B driving licence to drive Network Rail vehicles.
  • Commute: within a 60‑minute commute of the location.

Salary

£37,073 per annum
