Operative [Signalling Maintenance] – 23 Month Fixed Term (fast track programme to Technician) – Hereford P/way

At Network Rail, we serve millions of passengers and freight. This operative role keeps the rail network moving safely and smoothly.

Responsibilities

  • Work outdoors in all conditions, supporting essential maintenance of the rail network.
  • Transport kit and tools across challenging terrain.
  • Prepare and check equipment and vans before each shift.
  • Provide lookout duties to keep the team and trains safe.
  • Support the team in maintaining equipment and delivering safe and efficient work.

Qualifications

  • Teamworking – work closely with the team to deliver safe and efficient work delivery.
  • Communication – good communication skills to work safely and effectively.
  • Proactive planning – be punctual and anticipate the needs of the team.
  • Working under pressure – remain calm under pressure while trains pass close by.
  • Following rules – understand and respect rules, challenge unsafe situations.
  • Willingness to learn – develop skills and keep up to date with new standards.

Other Requirements

  • Shifts – changing pattern including days, nights, weekends.
  • Outdoor working – comfortable working in all weathers.
  • Safe working – subject to drug and alcohol testing, BPSS checks.
  • Driving – category B licence required.
  • Commute – within 60‑minute travel time of Hereford.
