About the role:

As a Senior Commercial Manager within the Innovation, Delivery & Improvement team, you will provide commercial services to our project managers and technical experts across the Technical Authority function to enable delivery of a wide range of high-profile projects focused on innovation, safety benefits and financial efficiencies. The successful candidate will have strong commercial knowledge and experience and be an effective collaborator.

You will be responsible for guiding teams to the most appropriate route to market, undertaking pre-contract activities in line with internal and external assurance, governance and regulatory requirements, and providing wider commercial support to the project team.

On any given day, you might:

  • Provide specialist expertise and guidance to project professionals on the most suitable route to market, establishing and implementing appropriate commercial strategies.
  • Support demonstration of efficiencies and continual improvement by undertaking analysis and benchmarking of completed projects.
  • Manage compliance with Network Rail's Corporate Governance rules.
  • Lead on contractual issues and negotiations with suppliers.
  • Undertake line management responsibilities for a Commercial Manager within the team.

The Innovation, Delivery and Improvement (IDI) team deliver a wide range of projects and programmes that enable the organisation and wider industry to deliver change, realise benefits and meet strategic objectives. These fall into four main categories:

  • Compliance - programmes aimed at achieving compliance with legislation or policy.
  • Strategic - deliver a clearly defined vision that realises strategic opportunities and may change the operating model.
  • Emergent - evolve to respond to situations or events that are often beyond the organisation's immediate control.
  • Research, Innovation & Development - driving change for the business through new ideas.

The IDI team is comprised of project professionals, planning & controls leads and commercial managers. We have a friendly and welcoming team environment and put a strong emphasis on learning and continuously improving.

Educated to degree standard or equivalent in related subject.

Proven experience of commercial management.

Experience of the construction/railway industry.

Excellent understanding of railway and construction industry forms of contract.

Experience of managing and developing staff.

Effective written and verbal communication skills.

Member of a relevant professional institute with Chartered status.
