Signallingishowwekeepthousandsoftrainsmovingsafelyacrossourrailway.Byoperatingasophisticatedtrafficlightsystemandotherspecialistequipment,ourSignallerscontrolthemovementoftrainsacrossthenetwork.Withoutsignalling,ourrailwaywouldn’tfunction.
Whatdoesitinvolve?
AsaSignaller,you’llneedtoreacttochangingsituations,stayvigilant,makequickdecisionsandstaycalmunderpressure.Thiscouldberespondingtoanincidentsuchastrespassersontheline;takingalineblockagestoallowtrackaccessformaintenancecolleagues,orcommunicatingwithatraindrivers.
Whateverthesituationyou’refacedwith,you’llbeabletoapplyyourtrainingandskillstomanageitsafelyandgetpassengersmovingandontheirwaytotheirdestination.
OurSignallersworkavarietyofshiftpatterns,includingnights,evenings,weekendsandbankholidays.Dependingonthesignallinglocation,thiscouldalsomeanlone-workingorworkingaspartofabiggerteam.Theresponsibilityofasafety-criticalroleisn’tforeveryone-butyou’llfinishthedayknowingtheworkyou’redoinghashelpedpassengersreachtheirdestinationssafely.
YourTrainingMatters
BecomingaSignallerisabigcommitmentandrequiresextensivetrainingandagoodamountofself-directedlearningthroughoutyourcareer.
Yoursignallerjourneybeginswithanintensive12weeksofInitialSignallerTraining(IST).Tenweeksofthistrainingwillbeclassroombasedandduringthistime,you’llbeexpectedtostayawayfromhomeSundaytoFridayeachweek.AccommodationwillbeprovidedbyNetworkRailduringthistime.You’llneedtopassexamsandstudyhard,sowearelookingforpeoplewhoarecommittedtolearningandarewillingtodedicatethemselvestoacompletelynewcareer.
Followingthis,you’llundertakelocation-specifictrainingwhereyou’lllearnon-the-jobandpracticeyourskillsinaliveenvironmentbeforebeingsigned-offasafullycompetentSignaller.
It’simportantyou’reactivelycommittedtoyourtrainingandpersonaldevelopment.AllSignallershaveanongoingcycleofcompetenceassessmentso thathelpkeeptheirskillsuptodate,butalsotohelpsupportprofessionaldevelopmentandcareerprogression.
