Network Rail High Speed Ltd. (NRHS) is responsible for operating and maintaining the UK's only international high-speed railway, High Speed (HS1).

The 109km HS1 infrastructure consists of a diverse range of railway assets such as the track, signalling, overhead line, lineside buildings, depots, viaducts and long tunnels. NRHS is also responsible for operating and maintaining three international stations; St Pancras, Ebbsfleet and Stratford International.

As a wholly owned subsidiary of Network Rail Infrastructure Ltd, NRHS is privately financed under an agreement with our client 'HS1 Ltd', undertaking a diverse range of activities from railway infrastructure maintenance and operations - through to station facilities management and retail on behalf of our client.

About the role

Are you looking for a hands-on role where your work makes a real difference every day?

As an Operative [Civils & Environment], you'll play a vital role in maintaining the structures and environment that support the railway network. From drainage systems, fencing and access points through to vegetation management and general civil infrastructure, your work will help ensure the railway remains safe, reliable and operational for the millions of passengers and freight services that depend on it.

Working as part of a skilled team, you'll undertake a variety of maintenance and repair activities across the network. Whether you're carrying out planned maintenance, responding to faults or helping prevent future issues, you'll be contributing directly to the safe operation of the railway.

No previous railway experience? That's absolutely fine. If you're enthusiastic, safety-focused, enjoy working outdoors and are keen to learn new skills, we'll provide the training and support needed to build a rewarding career with Network Rail.

What You'll Do

  • Carry out work safely and in accordance with safe systems of work, method statements and other company procedures.
  • Undertake maintenance, inspection and repair activities for which you have been trained and deemed competent.
  • Complete work activities as directed, ensuring all tasks are carried out safely, efficiently and in line with relevant standards.
  • Check that vehicles, plant, tools, equipment and materials under your control are safe, fit for purpose and used, stored and disposed of correctly.
  • Support the maintenance of civil and environmental assets, contributing to the safe and reliable operation of the railway.
  • Take responsibility for your own development by participating in training and learning opportunities.
  • Comply with all company policies, procedures and safety requirements.

Drugs and Alcohol Standard

All prospective candidates will be required to undergo and pass a drugs and alcohol test. Your application will be rescinded if you record a positive test. All positive drugs and alcohol test results for prospective candidates will be securely held on Sentinel database and a 5 year suspension from applying for a safety critical role, a role which requires PTS certification or a Key Safety role on Network Rail Managed Infrastructure will be enforced.
