Brief Description
Provide strategic leadership and direction for engineering development including products, services, systems and innovation to meet customer requirements. Accountable for delivering high performing services to Network Rail, Regions and Routes and drive best value engineering solutions integrating key supplier inputs.
The title of the role: Engineering Development Director
This is a permanent, full-time position, but flexible working patterns will be considered.
The salary range for this role is £97,850 – £112,283 and is a Band 1.B within the structure meaning you will report to the Engineering Services Director and receive standard company benefits for this grade including a travel allowance and competitive pension.
The successful candidate will be expected to travel to support your teams and customer needs. Our offices are located across the UK: Birmingham, Derby, Manchester, York, Glasgow, London, Cardiff, Swindon.
About the role (External)
We are here to connect people and communities, link freight to hubs and deliver value to the rail industry by providing solutions to railway challenges. Engineering Services is a function within Route Services, providing national skills and activities that enable regions and industry partners to deliver the railway for our customers. We design, develop, deliver and influence every part of the railway, including structures, track, traction power, level crossings, signalling and accessibility schemes. A team of almost 1000 people, we enable outcomes from bridges across motorways to safer signalling solutions, lifts in our stations to new stations, power distribution and specialist technical solution teams.
Main Responsibilities:
- Provide strategic leadership and direction for the development and delivery of products, services, systems and innovation to achieve business objectives.
- Lead the technical development of efficient asset improvement solutions through professional data capture, analysis and digital delivery of solutions.
- Lead the ES strategy for innovation with practical delivery of solutions through high level stakeholder management and supply chain integration from across rail and other sectors.
- Lead development of Strategic Business Plan, including commercially beneficial delivery models to ensure the retention of sustainable services.
- Develop and lead the technical direction for the professional development of engineers.
- Lead the Discipline Principal Engineers to deliver the Engineering Services objectives and attain all commercial objectives set by Route Services.
- Lead benchmarking and learning from audits, peer reviews, incidents, new technologies, and practices.
- Lead the identification, prioritisation and resolution of key engineering risks and issues.
- Lead the development and management of appropriate engineering services in accordance with company policies, standards and specifications.
- Identify and generate future workbank through successful client engagement.
- Lead the consistent and efficient integration of resources from all specialist teams.
- Discharge the duties of Principal Designer in line with Construction Design Management (CDM 2015) where appointed.

- Chartered Professional status with membership of a relevant professional institution (IMechE, ICE, IET, IRO, CMI etc).
- Extensive experience in the leadership of multi-disciplinary design for £multi-million programmes of work in the infrastructure sector.
- Proven ability in leading large teams (>100) across multiple disciplines and geographic locations.
- Proven leadership skills in driving outstanding performance in safety, wellbeing, environmental and quality.
- Proven experience in the development and maintenance of successful client/supplier relationships.
- Strong management and leadership skills with the vision/ability to establish effective working relationships.
- Highly motivated with excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Experience of developing and rolling out a design delivery strategy.
- Proven experience in business leadership and financial/commercial leadership.
