Who are we looking for? We are looking for someone who thrives on precision and takes pride in quality. You will have hands‑on experience in electronics production or testing and will be contributing to the safety and reliability of the UK rail network.

About the role

Engineering Services is a function within Route Services. We sit as a central team to provide national skills and activities which enable regions and industry partners to deliver the railway for our customers. As a large central functional team which focuses on engineering delivery, we have many roles from pure engineering to project management and touch every part of the railway from track, power, signalling to the lifts and escalators which are essential to keep our stations moving.

We are recruiting for a specific role within the Network Rail Technology Development Team (TDT), who design and manufacture the High Performance Switch System (HPSS), which is a type of Point Operating Equipment (POE) that is in service across Network Rail's infrastructure. TDT supply new HPSS systems, plus operational spares, tooling, repairs and full product support from their factory in Weston-super-Mare. On time delivery of safe and reliable HPSS equipment for use in the operational railway is at the forefront of our business, and we are now recruiting for an enthusiastic, motivated and inspiring individual to join the team as an Assistant Electronics Engineer to support our achievement of this goal.

What does the average day look like?

The successful candidate will support electronics production activities to facilitate timely delivery and overall operational efficiency in our factory in Weston-super-Mare:

  • Assembly, inspection, calibration, and testing of electronic equipment in accordance with engineering drawings, specifications, and quality standards.
  • Leading fault investigations on returned equipment, performing root cause analysis, preparing test plans and reports, and recommending design or process improvements.
  • Supporting and mentoring junior engineers and production staff, sharing technical expertise and promoting a culture of collaboration and excellence.
  • Documenting processes and results, including test reports, inspection records, and investigation summaries.

Your key skills include but are not limited to:

  • Hands‑on experience with electronics assembly and testing, including PCBAs, soldering, and use of oscilloscopes, multimeters, and signal generators.
  • Strong background in fault diagnosis and root cause analysis of electronic systems.
  • Ability to produce clear, concise technical documentation and communicate findings effectively.
  • Comfortable working in a production‑focused environment with occasional involvement in design and development.

Essential Criteria

  • HNC/HND or equivalent qualification or demonstrate equivalent experience (Level 4 / 5)
  • Substantial experience in a relevant engineering area
  • Sound knowledge of relevant policies and standards
  • An understanding of safety management systems and risk assessment techniques

Desirable Criteria

  • Degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline or able to demonstrate an equivalent level of experience (Level 6)
  • Broad technical engineering experience
  • Management or supervisory experience
  • Chartered status, or actively working towards Professional Registration
  • Knowledge of the railway industry and an understanding of railway infrastructure
