Job Description:
The Employee Relations (ER) Business Partner plays a crucial role in maintaining positive relationships between employees and the organisation. They provide geographical, face-to-face expert guidance and support on highly complex employee relations cases, in line with Network Rail policies and procedures, in addition to coaching and developing line managers.
Working closely with HR Business Partners to deliver an effective, consistent, and collaborative HR service, this role is essential for fostering a positive work environment and ensuring that employee relations are managed effectively and in compliance with legal and organisational standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide professional, expert, face-to-face Human Resources advice, coaching, and support to cross-functional line managers when dealing with escalated complex Employee Relations cases across a defined geographical area and in line with Network Rail policies and procedures.
- Provide clear guidance to managers regarding their responsibilities within a process or procedure and the elements the HR function will undertake.
- Proactively manage and develop relationships and communication channels with Business Partner teams and HR Direct regarding complex ER cases and development requirements.
- Develop and deliver targeted line manager up-skilling, working closely with the HR Business Partner and broader HR Direct team on company-wide initiatives.
- Maintain and track case records and documentation through HR Direct and Network Rail systems in a timely manner.
- Provide coaching, guidance, and support to enable line managers to formulate pragmatic and business-focused solutions, balanced with policy application and employment legislation.
- Ensure consistent advice to line managers by liaising across the broader HR function and sharing knowledge proactively.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge on Employment Legislation and organisational awareness.
- Support the ER Operations Manager or HR Business Partner team as required.
Preferred Qualifications and Experience:
- Proven track record in a HR Advisory role, handling complex Employee Relations cases, including Tribunal stages, within a large organisation.
- Strong commercial understanding and ability to align HR support with business needs.
- Experience in developing and delivering manager up-skilling and training interventions.
- Up-to-date Employment Law knowledge and practical application skills.
- Passion for customer service and professional HR support.
- Ability to establish credibility quickly and influence managers and senior leaders.
- Excellent time management, organisation, and prioritisation skills.
- Willingness and ability to travel across multiple locations.
- Strong analytical and diagnostic skills.
- Experience working in a unionised environment.
- Resilient, adaptable, and flexible.
- CIPD qualification or equivalent experience demonstrating competence.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Experience advising on Network Rail employment terms and conditions.
- Ability to work independently and remotely.
