About The Role

  • Duration: Permanent
  • Location: This role can be based in Manchester, Milton Keynes or Birmingham. This role is a full-time opportunity, flexible working patterns will be considered
  • Band & Salary: Band 4B £35,582 - £42,218

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for a proactive and knowledgeable Safety, Health & Environment Specialist who is committed to keeping people safe and ensuring high standards across the railway. You will have a strong understanding of health, safety and environmental legislation, with the confidence to challenge, influence and work collaboratively with colleagues and contractors. The role suits someone who is practical, well organised and able to translate policy into clear, effective on¿site action. Experience in a safety¿critical or infrastructure environment, and a genuine passion for continuous improvement, are essential.

About The Team

The Health, Safety & Sustainability (HSS) team provide subject matter advice, assurance, direction, and support to Route Services business areas, delivering on the HSS strategy, on high-risk areas of improvement and Occupational Health and Wellbeing. The team takes a lead role on all areas of HSS by providing support to Route Services functional teams and working with them to deliver strategic HSS objectives to support the business with a Railway Fit for the Future, Everyone Home Safe Every day and Everyone Fit for the Future.

What does the average day look like?

An average day in this role is varied, collaborative and focused on making a real difference. You will work closely with Route Services teams and leaders to embed the Safety, Health & Environment strategy into everyday activities, helping to strengthen risk management capability, systems and culture. Your time will be split between providing expert advice, supporting assurance activities, contributing to investigations and improvement programmes, and turning insight and data into clear reports that support better decision¿making. You will also play a key role in influencing positive cultural change, sharing learning and working with regulators and stakeholders to ensure risks are well managed, controls are effective, and safety remains at the heart of everything we do.

Essential Criteria

  • Must be a member of the Institute of Occupational Health and safety (IOSH) at Technical (TechIOSH) level or above
  • Knowledge and experience of working with appropriate ISO management system standards in a complex business, e.g. ISO 9001, 14001 and 45001
  • Demonstrable experience of internal auditing of SHE activities in a high-risk industry
  • Relevant experience in SHE and/or Q Governance, Risk, Assurance and Improvement in highly complex or high hazard organisations
  • Experience in preparing and reviewing SHE insights and communications
  • Strong influencing and communication skills
  • Good understanding of the UK and European legislative framework and requirements

Desirable Criteria

  • Educated to degree level
  • Internal or Lead audit trained
  • NEBOSH H&S Certificate or equivalent
  • Experience of Health and Safety, Quality and/or Environmental management
  • Experience of risk management in High Hazard industries
  • Experience of Supply Chain Management and Assurance
