Brief Description

Working in all weathers on the frontline, you will carry out everything from maintenance to faulting. You will help keep our nation moving every single day. As a Technician, you will work outdoors in a team, supporting essential maintenance to keep the railway running safely and smoothly for passengers and freight users. About the Role

Our Technicians provide the essential link between the Team Leader and the team's Operatives. Technicians specialise in a range of disciplines and for this role you will become a specialist in Signalling & Telecoms. You will be working with equipment including signals that control when trains can run, level crossings, and points systems. With your willingness to learn, you will develop a huge range of technical skills across a range of manual, electrical and digital equipment.

  • Effective communicator – You will need strong communication skills and be able to deliver clear instructions to the team and other colleagues.
  • Technical skills – You will have knowledge and experience of inspection, faulting, maintenance and renewal techniques in the discipline that you are applying for.
  • Safety – You consistently role model safe behaviours, can arrange and implement safe systems of work, and are confident to challenge if you think a situation is unsafe.
  • Problem solver – You will be persistent in finding safe and effective solutions.
  • Willingness to learn – You will consistently develop your skills and competencies relevant to your discipline, keeping up to date with new standards, procedures and instructions.
  • Relevant qualification – You will ideally hold an NVQ Level 1 or 2 linked to the discipline you are applying for, or have achieved an equivalent level of relevant experience.

Additional Information

  • Shifts – The Technician role involves a changing shift pattern including days, nights and weekends.
  • Outdoor working – Our Technicians work outside in all weathers and so you will be comfortable working in different conditions.
  • Safe working – Offers of employment are subject to drug and alcohol testing and passing the relevant medical assessment (hearing and eyesight examination). External candidates will also be required to undergo BPSS pre-employment checks.
  • Driving – A driving licence (category B) is required to drive Network Rail vehicles.
  • Commute – You must be within a 60-minute commute of the location that you are applying for.

Experience & Competency Requirements

Minimum Competency Requirement:

  • Compulsory: COSS (Preferably with CRP & OLP), SMTH (Modules a, b, c, d & f), IRSE License (or TV for Working Towards if Internal), Track Circuits (Preferably including EBi 200 Digital, HVI & DC), Points (HW/RCPL)
  • Desirable: Interlockings (SSI and/or RRI), SMTH SFI Level 1, Level Crossings (any), Control Systems (FDM, GETS Delphin & GETS MCS), Protection Controller
