We are seeking a highly skilled and analytical NOC L2 Engineer to serve as a key escalation point within our Network Operations Center. This role is responsible for the in-depth investigation, diagnosis, and resolution of complex network and system incidents that are beyond the scope of our L1 team. As a NOC L2 Engineer, you will leverage your deep technical expertise in routing, switching, and network infrastructure to perform root cause analysis and implement lasting solutions. Beyond reactive troubleshooting, you will proactively identify recurring issues, contribute to the improvement of operational processes, and mentor junior engineers. The ideal candidate is a seasoned network professional with a passion for problem-solving, a strong command of multi-vendor network technologies, and a drive to enhance network stability and performance.
Responsibilities
- Act as the primary technical escalation point for the NOC L1 team, taking ownership of complex and high-priority incidents to drive them to resolution.
- Perform advanced troubleshooting and in-depth root cause analysis for complex issues affecting multi-vendor network infrastructure, including routers, switches, firewalls, and load balancers.
- Configure and troubleshoot advanced routing protocols such as BGP and OSPF, and switching technologies including VLANs, STP, and VPC/MLAG across Cisco, Juniper, and other enterprise platforms.
- Proactively identify trends and recurring problems, working with engineering and architecture teams to develop and implement permanent solutions to prevent future occurrences.
- Develop, refine, and document operational procedures, runbooks, and knowledge base articles to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the entire NOC team.
- Participate in the planning and execution of scheduled network maintenance, upgrades, and migrations, owning the change management process for these activities.
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to NOC L1 Engineers, coaching them on troubleshooting techniques and best practices.
- Collaborate with vendors, carriers, and other internal IT teams to coordinate the resolution of service-impacting issues.
- Find opportunities to automate repetitive tasks and workflows using scripting languages (e.g., Python, PowerShell) to improve operational efficiency.
Requirements
- 3-5+ years of experience in a Network Operations Center or as a Network Engineer, with at least 2 years in a Tier 2 or equivalent escalation role.
- A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
- Expert-level knowledge of LAN/WAN protocols and topologies, including an in-depth understanding of TCP/IP, BGP, OSPF, EIGRP, and MPLS.
- Extensive hands-on experience with enterprise-grade network hardware from vendors such as Cisco (Nexus, Catalyst, ASR), Juniper, and Palo Alto Networks.
- Proficiency with network monitoring and analysis tools (e.g., SolarWinds, Wireshark, NetScout) to diagnose complex performance issues.
- Strong understanding of network security principles and experience with firewall and VPN configuration and troubleshooting.
- A professional-level certification such as Cisco CCNP Enterprise, Juniper JNCIS-ENT, or equivalent is highly required.
- Demonstrated ability to document technical solutions and create clear, concise operational procedures.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills, with the ability to work under pressure in a dynamic environment.
