About The Role

The Principal Systems Engineer position is based at Portsmouth Naval Base within the Systems Engineering Hub, part of the Warship Technical Authority (WTA) Service Hub. This role involves delivering comprehensive systems engineering support for naval platforms, including warship systems and equipment. You will be integral to a high-performing team responsible for managing ongoing contracted workstreams and providing tailored engineering services to Asset Management Service Hubs, such as Platform Management, Maintenance, Supply Chain, Data, and Digital Services. Your expertise will support critical functions like design change management, technical assurance, obsolescence management, and future support planning. As a technical leader, you will engage with stakeholders, mentor engineering teams, and ensure the delivery of high-quality, compliant solutions that meet safety, security, and performance standards. Your contribution will help shape the future of naval capabilities, ensuring operational readiness and technological advancement.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess a degree in a STEM or systems-related discipline, with significant experience in applying systems engineering principles across the lifecycle. Professional accreditation or working towards Chartered Engineer (CEng) status is desirable. Candidates should demonstrate proficiency in systems architecture frameworks such as SysML, UML, UAF, NAF, or TOGAF, and have practical experience with Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) tools like Enterprise Architect. Familiarity with requirements management tools such as DOORS, and a solid understanding of ISO 15288 standards, are essential. A background in maritime or ship systems is advantageous, along with the ability to lead, guide, and mentor engineering teams. Strong communication skills, problem-solving capabilities, and a proactive approach to risk management are also required to succeed in this role.

Responsibilities

  • Understand and analyze complex problem spaces, surface constraints, and emergent behaviors, balancing trade-offs related to performance, cost, safety, security, and schedule. Define clear success criteria and maintain comprehensive documentation of system interactions, key decisions, and trade-offs.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to capture, decompose, and agree on requirements. Set acceptance criteria, maintain end-to-end traceability, and manage change impacts effectively.
  • Champion and govern Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) practices, utilizing tools like Enterprise Architect to model system behavior, structure, and interfaces. Establish modelling standards, keep models synchronized, and generate outputs supporting design, verification, validation, and compliance.
  • Break down ambiguous, multi-domain problems into manageable, testable elements. Define abstraction levels, visualize dependencies, control scope, and prioritize risks using MBSE techniques to keep complexity manageable throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Tailor and implement the engineering lifecycle, including planning progressive integration, preparing teams for design and test reviews, and driving verification and validation activities to ensure on-time delivery and high-quality outcomes.
  • Collaborate with Asset Management Service Hubs to enhance service offerings, applying systems engineering principles and tools to improve operational efficiencies and effectiveness.
  • Act as the technical authority within your scope, leading technical reviews, adhering to engineering governance, and ensuring compliance with safety and security regulations. Manage multiple work packages, define statements of work, and coordinate with stakeholders to resolve conflicts and mitigate risks.
  • Mentor and coach engineers, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and technical excellence across teams. Promote systems engineering best practices and support capability development initiatives.
