About The Role
We are seeking a highly skilled Lead Software Engineer / Team Lead specializing in Java Spring Boot to join our Manchester-based team, with flexible WFH arrangements. In this pivotal role, you will lead a small, high-performing development team working on complex, real-time sports betting applications. Your primary responsibility will be to guide and inspire your team, ensuring the successful delivery of high-quality software solutions. This role offers an excellent opportunity for a hands-on technical leader who enjoys balancing architecture, coding, and team development.
You will collaborate closely with product owners and stakeholders to oversee the full software development lifecycle, promoting engineering best practices and continuous improvement. The role emphasizes technical excellence, team mentorship, and fostering an environment where developers can innovate and excel. With an approximate 80/20 split between hands-on coding and people management, you'll be instrumental in shaping the technical direction while nurturing your team’s growth.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in backend software engineering with significant experience in Java and Spring Boot development. You should have proven leadership capabilities, including mentoring and coaching team members, and be an advocate for software engineering best practices. A solid understanding of computer science fundamentals such as object-oriented programming, multithreading, design patterns, and data structures is essential. Familiarity with Test Driven Development (TDD) is also required.
Additionally, experience with agentic AI coding and modern cloud technologies will be advantageous. Strong communication skills, pragmatic problem-solving abilities, and stakeholder management experience are critical for success in this role. While not essential, familiarity with Kafka, Kubernetes, Docker, and AWS will be considered a plus.
Responsibilities
- Lead, mentor, and inspire a small development team, fostering a collaborative and innovative environment.
- Take ownership of the technical architecture and contribute to hands-on coding, primarily using Java Spring Boot.
- Collaborate with product owners and stakeholders to understand requirements and translate them into scalable, high-quality solutions.
- Oversee the full software development lifecycle, ensuring timely delivery of features and enhancements.
- Promote engineering excellence by advocating best practices, code reviews, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Create a developer-friendly environment that encourages focus, innovation, and professional development.
- Implement and uphold testing strategies, including TDD, to ensure robust and reliable software.
- Stay abreast of emerging technologies and industry trends, integrating relevant innovations into projects.
- Coordinate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration and deployment of applications.
