Principal Technician – Dumfries/Carlisle/Barrow
Location: Carlisle (covering areas such as Carlisle, Dumfries, Barrow)
Salary: £35,000 – £40,000 per year
Working Hours: Monday – Saturday, 45 hours per week, shift pattern between 7am and 7pm.

Job Purpose
Principal Technicians are responsible for driving quality and safety throughout all tasks completed by the engineers. The role will consist of completing quality audits against our engineers in the field to ensure that all tasks are completed right the first time, and all processes and procedures are followed. The Principal Technicians will carry out onsite coaching with engineers who require support or training, assist with complaints, and act as the Field Manager’s eyes on the ground. They will also assist with onboarding and off‑boarding of engineers and ensure that all engineers have the correct stock and tooling to safely carry out their daily tasks.
Key Responsibilities
- Complete tooling and stock audits on engineers
- Complete quality audits, both in‑progress and retrospective
- Coaching engineers to ensure that all tasks are carried out to the highest quality and safety standards
- Driving and improving quality focus within the region, to reduce ELF and ILF
- Assist with any complex installs, services and remediations, including fault finding in the network
- Support the Field Manager in improving all quality aspects within the region
Skills, Knowledge & Expertise
- Experience in a similar role within the telecoms industry
- Fault finding and network experience incl. OTDR would be beneficial
- Experience in coaching/developing engineers
- Passion for quality of work, and bringing others on a journey to improve
- Ability to conduct risk assessment and hazard identification, with a strong emphasis on Health and Safety practices
- Excellent organisational skills
- Clear and concise communication abilities
- Proactive approach to improving processes and efficiencies, with the customer always in the forefront of the decision
