The Professional Scrub Nurse/Clinical Nurse is responsible for the assessment, planning, and implementation of individualised, holistic, and person-centred nursing care of a patient, their families, or the community, either performed directly or indirectly. The incumbent coordinates patient care within the concept of the multi-disciplinary health team, using scientifically based nursing theories and processes, treating patients as physical, social, and spiritual individuals.
The Scrub Registered Nurse will be responsible for the wellbeing of the patient intra operatively, ensuring delivery of high-quality care in accordance with hospital standards and policies, and is a role model in the delivery of evidence-based care. Responsibilities include:
- Preparation, checking, control, and charging of stock.
- Supervision and maintenance of instrumentation and equipment.
- Completing capital expenditure documentation as per doctor’s preferences.
- Participating in Clinical Governance.
KEY WORK OUTPUT AND ACCOUNTABILITIES
CONSISTENCY OF CARE
- Patient care: Ensure Bill of Materials (picking slips) with correct references is always updated and available, taking into consideration doctors’ preferences and changes communicated to the stock controllers.
- Ensure consignment stock is well controlled and charged, and the “pink” book is completed timeously.
- Ensure all stock, gases, and scheduled medicines are charged appropriately using Mo-Bit, and the BOM sheet is completed accurately.
- Complete the Peri-Operative document/BOM/CareOn and theatre register accurately.
- Assist with completing relevant capital expenditure documentation and obtain quotations for instrumentation and/or equipment that is beyond economical repair.
Research activities: Keep abreast of current research in the discipline.
Quality assurance: Participate in the theatre’s quality improvement programme and adhere to Netcare medical waste management principles.
Governance, Safety awareness and risk management: Maintain a therapeutic, clean, and safe environment that is free from medico-legal hazards. Co-ordinate with the Clinical Facilitation Department and other members of the multi-disciplinary team to meet the ongoing educational needs of the nursing staff/students as well as the patients.
