Location: Sudbury, Suffolk (4 on 4 off shift pattern)

Salary: £49,000 - £53,000 (including shift premium) depending on skill level + additional benefits

Position Summary

We are now looking for a Skilled Shift Maintenance Engineer, known internally as a Line Performance Engineer, to help deliver the reliability strategy for our Purina factory in Sudbury, Suffolk. Ideally, this would be a multiskilled engineer with a proven track record or a single skilled engineer willing to develop their career further.

A day in the life of a Line Performance Engineer

Here at Purina, we have moved to a 24/7-line centric approach to help drive efficiencies within our production. This position is a key role for the factory; responsible for multiple production assets in terms of the engineering strategy, to support in driving the site to world-class performance levels in safety, quality, cost, and service. As a Maintenance Engineer, you will be responsible for ensuring the smooth operation of production equipment to maximize uptime and contribute to the overall efficiency of the manufacturing process. You will respond quickly to equipment breakdowns, perform regular maintenance checks, and identify areas for improvement to ensure high-quality production and a safe working environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Respond to Equipment Breakdowns: Address equipment malfunctions swiftly to minimize downtime and maintain production continuity. Document findings and record solutions for future reference.
  • Maintenance: Conduct routine maintenance checks and procedures on all production equipment to ensure optimal performance and availability. Proactively perform improvement activities to extend equipment life.
  • Parts and Service Procurement: Obtain cost estimates for parts and services to ensure timely and cost-effective repairs and maintenance.
  • Safety Culture: Champion a safety-first culture by identifying and eliminating potential safety hazards to ensure a safe working environment for all team members.
  • Quality Assurance: Ensure that all products are manufactured in strict adherence to established quality standards.
  • Data Recording: Accurately log all maintenance tasks, breakdowns, and corrective actions using the SAP CMMS System.
  • Continuous Improvement: Participate in and support initiatives aimed at improving operational efficiency, including activities such as inspections, abnormality identification, centre lining, breakdown analysis, and the implementation of preventive and predictive maintenance strategies.
  • Drive Operational Excellence: Contribute to the continuous improvement of key business processes throughout manufacturing to enhance productivity, quality, and cost-effectiveness.

What will make you successful

To be successful in this key role, we expect you to ideally have experience working in a FMCG manufacturing environment, maybe as a Technician, Shift Engineer, or a Maintenance Engineer, and have strong service orientation amongst internal stakeholders with lots of proactive initiative and passion for continuous improvement. Other key attributes we are looking for are:

  • Ideally educated to apprenticeship level NVQ 3 or hold a recognised engineering qualification.
  • Multiskilled engineer or single skilled and willing to develop will be considered.
  • Demonstrate mechanical comprehension & food safety/Food handling awareness.
  • Ability to understand and adhere to strict hygiene rules.
  • Experience in Planned Preventative asset Maintenance.
  • Experience in Root Cause Analysis tools/problem-solving methodology.
  • Understanding of Lean manufacturing tools including TPM.
  • Demonstrates understanding of Continuous Improvement and cost awareness.
  • Data analysis and understanding of performance indicators.
  • Demonstrate that you are a real team player.
