Scope:

Day-to-day manufacturing execution support and service relationship management for the CPW contract (safety, quality, service, and escalation management).

Role Purpose:

The Manufacturing Lead supports the Manufacturing Manager in delivering safe, high quality and efficient manufacturing operations, ensuring daily plans are executed and performance issues are addressed quickly. The role deputises for the Manufacturing Manager as required and acts as the Customer Service Contact for the CPW contract, managing the day-to-day service relationship, coordinating responses to service issues, and leading the site’s escalation process to and from the customer.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deputy for Manufacturing Manager: Deputise for the Manufacturing Manager during absence and provide day-to-day operational support, ensuring continuity of decision-making and delivery.
  • CPW customer service contact & relationship management: Act as the primary Customer Service Contact for the CPW contract; manage the day-to-day service relationship, including service reviews, issue tracking, and coordination of internal actions to meet commitments.
  • Service issue escalation: Lead escalation of service issues to the customer in a timely, clear and solution-focused manner; act as the main point of contact for escalations raised by the customer and ensure robust follow-up through to closure.
  • Daily operational delivery: Support execution of the production plan, coordinating priorities across lines/areas and shifts; ensure daily performance routines are completed and issues are escalated appropriately.
  • Safety, food safety & quality: Champion safe systems of work and compliance with HACCP, GMP, allergen controls, hygiene and traceability; support investigations, corrective actions and audit readiness.
  • Performance & problem solving: Use data (e.g. downtime, waste, yield and plan attainment) to prioritise issues; drive structured problem solving with Operations, Engineering and Quality to restore and sustain performance.
  • Cross-functional coordination: Work closely with Engineering, Supply Chain and QA to align on constraints, maintenance windows, material availability and quality disposition, ensuring service risks are identified early and mitigated.
  • Continuous improvement support: Support CI initiatives (loss elimination, 5S, standard work) and trials/NPI activity, ensuring actions are implemented and sustained on shift.
  • People support & capability: Coach team members and shift leaders on standards and routines; support onboarding, training and competency coverage; reinforce behavioural and performance expectations.

Key Measures of Success (KPIs):

  • Safety: completion of safety actions; near miss/incident reporting quality; adherence to safe systems of work.
  • Food safety/quality: GMP/HACCP compliance; audit readiness; timely closure of deviations and corrective actions.
  • Service: schedule attainment; OTIF; accurate and timely customer updates for CPW.
  • Escalations: service issues raised and managed to closure within agreed timescales; customer satisfaction with issue handling (where measured).
  • Performance: reduction of repeat issues; improved downtime/waste drivers in owned areas; adherence to daily performance routines.
  • People: training/competency completion; engagement with standards and routines.

Skills, Knowledge & Experience:

  • Experience in a manufacturing lead/supervisory role within a highly regulated industry (FMCG/food desirable but not essential), with strong understanding of shopfloor execution and shift support.
  • Proven capability supporting daily/weekly performance routines (tier meetings, actions, loss review) and driving timely escalation and closure of issues.
  • Strong customer focus with experience managing service expectations, providing clear updates, and handling escalations professionally (CPW or similar contract environment desirable).
  • Good working knowledge of food safety and quality controls (HACCP, GMP, allergens, hygiene/foreign body controls) and confidence operating in an audit ready environment.
  • Strong analytical and decision-making skills with experience using performance data (plan attainment, downtime, waste/yield) to prioritise actions.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and continuous improvement mindset (Lean/TPM/CI tools desirable) with ability to coordinate cross-functional actions.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management across Operations, Engineering, QA, Supply Chain and customer interfaces.
  • Comfortable with manufacturing systems (MES/ERP), reporting, and standard operating documentation.

Qualifications (Preferred):

  • Essential Proven Track record in Food Manufacturing
  • NVQ Level 3 / apprenticeship (or equivalent experience) in Manufacturing, Engineering, Food, Operations, or similar.
  • HACCP Level 2 desirable (or willingness to complete training); internal auditor awareness beneficial.
  • Basic safety qualification/awareness training (e.g., IOSH Working Safely or IOSH Managing Safely) desirable.
  • Lean/CI awareness or practical experience using CI tools (e.g., 5S, standard work, root cause analysis) desirable.

Working Conditions:

This role operates in a food manufacturing environment with regular time on the factory floor and exposure to noise, dust (grain), moving machinery, temperature variation, and manual handling activities. Flexibility is required to support shift teams, critical incidents, shutdowns, trials, and business needs.
