We are seeking an experienced Electrical and Control Design Manager to lead and oversee the full design lifecycle for major water and wastewater infrastructure projects. This role is responsible for managing design consultants, ensuring technical quality, and delivering designs that meet programme, cost, constructability, and operational requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage design consultants to produce detailed designs that fully comply with project programmes and client contracts, owning the end‑to‑end design process.
  • Oversee and direct the technical development of designs within your discipline.
  • Prepare, lead, and chair progress and design review meetings with the Client and consultants/designers.
  • Monitor design development, identify efficiencies, and control design growth.
  • Ensure constructability is embedded in design, working closely with operations and delivery teams to guarantee designs are practical and fit for construction.
  • Develop designs that support optimal long‑term plant operation, collaborating regularly with both internal and client operations teams.
  • Work jointly with consultants/designers and the Client to achieve timely design acceptance and close‑out comments.
  • Review specifications for site works and surveys; manage subcontractors to ensure timely delivery of information required for design progress.
  • Review consultant design programmes and updates; work with the project planner to validate information, identify risks, and advise on client reporting.
  • Verify that drawings and specifications contain sufficient and accurate information prior to construction.
  • Perform complex electrical and control engineering tasks related to design and operational support.
  • Provide technical supervision, support, and guidance to engineering staff.
  • Analyse, plan, design, and implement capital projects; collaborate with other engineering disciplines.
  • Serve as subject matter expert and provide leadership to professional and sub‑professional staff.
  • Conduct technical calculations and verify data sheets; manage relationships with stakeholders.
  • Negotiate technical and commercial terms with vendors.
  • Implement designs for the construction stage.
  • Plan and manage the delivery of design elements, including resource allocation, time, and cost.
  • Manage design‑related risks, ensuring compliance with performance and commissioning requirements.

Skills & Experience

  • BSc/BEng in Electrical, Control, or related engineering discipline.
  • Minimum 7 years’ experience in water industry projects.
  • Strong background in sewage treatment works design and delivery.
  • Experience delivering design for Thames Water (TWUL) Capital Projects, particularly Stages 3–5 of the Capital Delivery Stage Gate Process.
  • Demonstrated experience in the design and handover of sewage treatment plants during both design and construction phases.
  • Proven experience delivering designs to meet performance specifications, compliance targets, and target cost requirements.
  • Experience in designing and delivering upgrades for sewage treatment plants.
