NES Fircroft are working on behalf of an industry leading power cabling client, sourcing a site Quantity Surveyor. The Site Quantity Surveyor will be supporting a high profile project in the UK, which involves the construction of a large HVDC cable to accelerate the UK’s green energy targets. This is a hybrid role working from home with site travel to sites within Scotland. Please note this has been assessed as Inside IR35 (PAYE Umbrella Only).

About the Role

  • Develop cost estimates and project budgets.
  • Review construction plans and specifications to identify cost-effective solutions.
  • Track project progress and manage costs throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Negotiate with suppliers and subcontractors to secure favourable pricing.
  • Prepare tender documents, contracts, and valuations.
  • Assess and draft contracts for project needs.
  • Handle AFP (Applications for Payment) and invoicing.
  • Provide project updates and cost reports to the UK management team.

Responsibilities

  • Ascertain customer needs and provide accurate and timely quotations regarding extra works if the Project Director is unable to do so.
  • Liaise with the client and other construction professionals, such as site managers, project managers, and site engineers.
  • Select and procure construction materials from our supply chain.
  • Review contract conditions and ensure the project meets contractual requirements.
  • Ensure notices and prices to clients are provided as per contract requirements.
  • Strong understanding and knowledge of financial and contractual controls required.
  • Carry out a risk register on all projects.
  • Assemble site reports for project meetings.
  • Ensure all labour and materials are arranged prior to project commencement (all size projects).
  • Hold monthly project meetings with site managers with a formal agenda to ensure all projects achieve set KPI’s and report back to the Management team.
  • Monitor and ensure resources are used in the most cost-efficient manner to bring projects in ahead of schedule and at the required margin.
  • Represent the Company at site meetings ensuring all information required is obtained.
  • Maintain accurate records and a clear audit trail.
  • Forecast accurately ongoing budgets for projects.
  • Prepare tender and project execution documents.
  • Write and review third party (civils, design and HDD etc.) subcontracts, DOR, RFQ/SOW and price schedule to ensure alignment to required works and associated costing.
  • Check sub-contractors invoices and pass onto Contract team ensuring compliance with purchase order.
  • Check employee timesheets and approve as necessary.
  • Check the accuracy and keep a record of Plant return sheets, material return sheets, site diary, dayworks, and purchase invoices every day.
  • Manage the performance of site teams including supervisors.
  • Set targets and monitor in liaison with contract and project teams including contract reviews on a weekly basis.
  • Conduct regular (weekly) on-site visits to assess progress and verify quantities.
  • Measure and value the work done on site.
  • Plan work in liaison with Office/Health and Safety Manager on his/her jobs.
  • Place all orders on purchase invoices and copy emailed to accounts manager for inclusion in projected project costs.
  • Provide any additional works/alteration to works quotations.
  • Review and appoint competent and suitably qualified sub-contractors, managing all subcontracts in liaison with other departments, Legal, Purchasing, Contract and Project team.
  • Ensure all health and safety legislation is adhered to.
  • Provide information for the submission of pre-qualification questionnaires.
  • Compile valuations/retentions for payment.
  • Actively monitor site costings and productivity and resolve any problems quickly.
  • Provide both constructive criticism and positive feedback to employees and sub-contractors.
  • Carry out any other tasks to ensure successful execution of the project.
  • Coach and mentor colleagues.

Qualifications

  • Preference of greater than 5 years background & experience in QS within a large power/transmission and distribution/cable installation environment working with civils subcontractors.
  • Strong analytical and numerical abilities.
  • Exceptional attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of construction practices, materials, and regulations.
  • Proficiency with relevant software tools.
  • Strong negotiation and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • A qualification in Quantity Surveying or a related field is preferred.
