About the opportunity:
We are representing a market-leading infrastructure engineering business is seeking an experienced Substation Project Manager to join a growing power delivery team responsible for complex HV electrical infrastructure projects across the UK.
This role offers the opportunity to take full ownership of major substation and grid connection schemes, managing projects from mobilisation through construction, commissioning and energisation.
The successful candidate will be a proven delivery professional with a strong background in HV substations, capable of leading multidisciplinary teams, managing key stakeholder relationships and ensuring projects are delivered safely, on programme and within budget.
You will lead day-to-day project execution across all phases of delivery, coordinating civil, electrical and commissioning activities while acting as the primary point of contact for clients and stakeholders.
This is a highly autonomous role suited to someone who enjoys taking ownership and driving project outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead HV and EHV substation projects from award through to energisation
- Ensure projects are delivered safely on time and within budget
- Manage programme performance, risk and project controls
- Oversee project reporting and stakeholder communications
- Drive project execution through all construction and commissioning phases
- Lead Site Managers, Supervisors and delivery teams
- Coordinate multiple subcontractors across civil and electrical packages
- Promote high standards of health, safety and quality
- Ensure efficient site operations and productivity
- Manage substation construction and installation activities
- Coordinate primary and secondary plant installation
- Support delivery of transformers, switchgear, protection and control systems
- Oversee commissioning interfaces and energisation activities
- Ensure successful coordination between design, construction and commissioning teams
- Act as the main client-facing representative on projects
- Build strong relationships with customers and key stakeholders
- Manage expectations and project communications
- Represent the business professionally on major infrastructure projects
- Monitor project costs and performance against budget
- Support management of variations and change control
- Work closely with commercial teams to maximise project performanceManage project risks and opportunities throughout delivery
Requirements
- Strong background within power transmission and distribution infrastructure
- Experience managing projects valued more than £5m
- Knowledge of substation construction, installation and commissioning activities
- Experience managing multidisciplinary site teams and subcontractors
- Strong client-facing and stakeholder management skills
- Excellent understanding of health, safety and quality requirements within the power sector
- Experience in AIS and GIS substations, Grid connection projects, Primary substations, Electrical infrastructure projects, Transformer installation, Switchgear installation, Protection & Control systems, Energisation and commissioning activities, National Grid, DNO or ICP projects
- National Grid project experience
- Renewable energy or BESS infrastructure experience
- NEC contract knowledge
