MEP Assistant Design Engineer

About the Role
Our client is a leading organisation delivering major infrastructure and transportation projects across the UK.
Due to continued growth and a significant project pipeline, they are seeking an MEP Assistant Design Engineer to support the delivery of complex rail and civil engineering schemes.
This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer looking to develop their experience within a multidisciplinary design environment, working alongside experienced design, construction, and stakeholder teams on large-scale infrastructure projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the coordination and integration of MEP and associated systems throughout all project phases, ensuring effective alignment with civil engineering works.
- Assist the design team with design development activities, including the review of drawings, specifications, technical submissions, and design documentation.
- Participate in coordination meetings and monitor the progression of actions through to completion.
- Liaise with consultants, subcontractors, suppliers, and internal project teams to resolve technical and design‑related issues.
- Support the management and coordination of design activities across rail infrastructure and track‑related systems during both design and construction phases.
- Monitor progress against programme requirements and provide regular updates to project leadership.
- Ensure designs and installations comply with statutory requirements, industry standards, client specifications, and relevant regulations.
- Assist with the delivery of design assurance processes throughout design, construction, testing, and handover stages.
- Coordinate inputs from designers and supply chain partners to achieve safe, efficient, and compliant project solutions.
- Work closely with design leads, construction teams, commercial teams, planners, and key stakeholders to manage project interfaces.
- Attend and contribute to project meetings with clients, contractors, and multidisciplinary delivery teams.
- Support the identification and management of design risks, opportunities, changes, and value engineering initiatives.
- Provide technical support during construction and assist with the resolution of design‑related issues.
- Review technical reports, monitoring information, and project documentation.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives focused on programme, cost, quality, and safety performance.
About You
To be considered for this position, you should have
- A degree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Experience or exposure to major infrastructure, rail, transportation, or civil engineering projects.
- Knowledge of engineering design coordination and multidisciplinary project delivery.
- An understanding of relevant rail and infrastructure design standards and industry practices.
- Awareness of safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements within construction and engineering environments.
- Experience coordinating with consultants, contractors, suppliers, or third‑party stakeholders.
- Strong communication and relationship‑building skills.
- Excellent organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple workstreams and interfaces.
- Familiarity with BIM processes and 3D design coordination tools.
- A proactive, collaborative, and professional approach to problem‑solving.
Desirable
- Experience in railway systems integration or rail infrastructure projects.
- Experience supporting track, permanent way, or transportation‑related design activities.
- Progress towards or attainment of professional chartership (e. g., ICE or equivalent).
