Overview

The Invertebrate Genetics team within the department of Bioscience conducts critical research to support development and improve understanding of novel insecticides.

We are looking for a lab-based scientist to work with the model species Drosophila melanogaster and to deploy molecular genetic tools to support our insecticide discovery pipeline.

A key component of this work will be enhancing our abilities to genetically validate potential insecticide targets.

The objective is to subsequently develop and deploy such tools in non-model agricultural pests.

An enthusiasm and ability for working outside of the model species is therefore essential.

If successful, you will be part of an Invertebrate Genetics team using molecular genetic approaches to execute strategies to support insecticide discovery.

  • Work with the project lead to evaluate and deploy molecular-genetic technologies to enable modulation of putative insecticide targets.
  • Execute studies to support insecticide projects and programs.
  • Develop an awareness of project key strategic goals.
  • Communicate outcomes of experimental activities with stakeholders.
  • Assist with the maintenance and enhancement of the invertebrate molecular laboratory, adapting to current business priorities.
  • Assist with routine stock maintenance and compound screening activities.
  • Solve scientific problems and produce high quality data to enable the project/platform to address business challenges using proven methodologies.
  • Document experiments and test results, contributing to reports and proposing appropriate follow up actions.
  • Maintain high standards of HSE compliance, which includes following all risk assessments, reporting of safety incidents and supporting the lab steward’s community when requested.

Experience & skills

  • Must have a degree / MSc in a relevant science discipline. Appropriate technical science background is essential.
  • Experience in a lab-based role is essential.
  • Experience / knowledge of molecular genetic techniques is essential.
  • Experience of working with Drosophila melanogaster is desirable.
  • Excellent note keeping and organisational skills.
