Nero Energy is a UK building decarbonisation and energy management consultancy. We help schools, local authorities, universities and commercial estates plan, design and deliver heat decarbonisation, retrofit and energy projects funded through PSDS, Salix, Re:Fit, Capex, Opex and ESCo routes. Our work spans the full RIBA Plan of Work (Stages 0–7), from strategic definition and feasibility through design, tender, construction and handover, and into in-use energy procurement, data management and performance reporting.

We are growing the projects team and need a mechanically-trained Project Manager to take ownership of live decarbonisation projects from briefing through to handover.

The Role

Reporting to the Head of Projects, you will run a portfolio of building decarbonisation and retrofit projects across RIBA Stages 1–6 owning programme, budget, risk, design coordination, contractor delivery and handover. Day-to-day, you will:

  • Lead client relationships across public and private sector estates.
  • Coordinate multi-disciplinary design teams across mechanical, electrical, fabric and controls.
  • Run tender processes, contractor appointments, construction supervision and handover.
  • Track grant compliance, programme milestones and funder reporting against PSDS, Salix and similar conditions.
  • Own project commercials, forecasts, change control, valuations and final account.
  • Hand projects cleanly to our energy and data team for ongoing performance monitoring.
  • Report to clients, internal leadership and funders with clear, decisive communication.

The Ideal Candidate

You are a mechanical engineer who has moved into project delivery. You can read a Low or Zero Carbon feasibility, pressure-test a heat loss calculation, challenge a contractor's pricing schedule, and translate technical decisions into commercial and programme terms for clients.

Essential Skills

  • Mechanical or building services background via degree, HNC/HND, apprenticeship, or directly equivalent experience.
  • Ambition to actively work towards chartered engineer status under CEng, IEng.
  • 3–6 years of project delivery experience in heat decarbonisation, retrofit, M&E design or building services consultancy.
  • Solid grounding in low-carbon heat (ASHP, GSHP, heat networks), retrofit fabric measures and LZC plant integration.
  • Working knowledge of the RIBA Plan of Work, PAS 2035/2038, and relevant Approved Documents and CIBSE guidance.
  • Strong client communication and the ability to lead multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Clean UK driving licence; site travel is a regular part of the role.

Desirable Skills

  • MEng or BEng in mechanical engineering or building services (or directly equivalent route).
  • Active progress towards chartership - CEng, IEng or MCIBSE.
  • MCIBSE, MCABE, IMechE professional accreditation.
  • Ability to produce mechanical design output at RIBA Stages 2–3 (concept and spatial coordination), with Stage 4 (technical design) capability a strong preference.
  • Experience with public-sector grant funding (PSDS, Salix, Re:Fit) and procurement frameworks.
  • Exposure to heat networks, district energy or larger commercial decarbonisation programmes.
  • Familiarity with MS Project (or equivalent) and BIM coordination.

The Role

Genuine ownership of live projects, with a direct line to senior leadership. Competitive salary (DOE), pension and a sensible benefits package. An office at Whitehills Business Park, Blackpool, that we actually like working from.
