Role Overview

The NOC Graduate Placement provides an opportunity for graduates to gain hands-on experience within a 24/7 Network Operations Centre, supporting the delivery of critical broadcast and satellite transmission services. Working as part of the NOC shift team, the successful candidate will assist in monitoring and controlling teleport operations, ensuring the quality and integrity of audio and video signals, responding to operational issues, and supporting the coordination of transmission services for internal and external clients. The role offers exposure to a wide range of broadcast technologies, satellite communications, and operational systems, providing practical experience in fault diagnosis, service management, and live broadcast operations while developing the technical and professional skills required for a career in broadcast engineering and network operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Undertake integrity checks of all incoming and outgoing video and audio signals.
  • Monitor the status and performance of operational systems and ancillary equipment, taking corrective action as required.
  • Communicate fault conditions to engineering support staff, customers and service suppliers and generate incident reports.
  • Information handling and dissemination using telephone, VDU, off air monitoring sound and vision, email.
  • Undertake the establishment of occasional use services, at short notice, in accordance with customer requirements.
  • Co-ordinate services with customers, satellite operators and third-party providers.
  • Respond to alarms/warnings in accordance with procedures.
  • Undertake routine testing, preventative and corrective maintenance of transmission systems and ancillary equipment.
  • Operating master router switcher and ensuring in house client requirements are met.
  • Log all technical faults and irregularities.
  • Provide technical advice and assistance for all studio, lines and NEP Connect operations.
  • Use the NEP Connect scheduling systems, to check lines booking and coverage details.
  • Obtain running order from galleries and cross check with scheduling information.
  • Advise Production Staff concerning studio technical facilities when possible.
  • Report any irregularities on the system drawings and contribute to the update of the system drawings.
  • Be conversant with the communications and talkback systems.
  • Be conversant with essential services in technical areas, e.g. mains, generator, UPS, air con etc and call out procedures in case of failure.
  • Basic vision control operations.
  • Basic sound operations.
  • Basic VTR operation.
  • Basic character generator operation.
  • Familiarity with broadcast system standards and waveform measurements.
  • Operating a wide range of equipment including IRDs, Sat Modems, HPAs, Up-converters, Down converters, Encoders, Multiplexers, Stat Muxes, Spectrum analyser, Standard Converters, VTRs, DVDs, Waveform Analyser, broadcast routers, TBUs, ISDNs codecs, Talkback units.
  • Supporting a multi-channel transmission environment.

Qualifications & Experience

  • A degree in Broadcast Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Telecommunications, Computer Networking or a related discipline.
  • An interest in broadcast, satellite or media technology.
  • Knowledge of RF and satellite uplink systems.
  • Knowledge of broadcast encoding, multiplexing and conditional access systems.
  • Familiarity with broadcast video standards and transmission technologies.
  • Awareness of broadcast routing systems and video routers.
  • Familiarity with talkback and communications systems.
  • Awareness of broadcast scheduling and booking systems.
  • Familiarity with video monitoring and signal analysis systems.
  • A willingness to learn new technologies and work in a fast-paced operational environment.
