A leading Tier 1 Canadian contractor is seeking an exceptional Project Director to join the leadership team on a landmark $5 billion multidisciplinary rail project in Toronto. This is a rare opportunity to take executive responsibility for the successful delivery of one of Canada's most complex transportation infrastructure projects, encompassing major civil works, stations, rail systems and integrated programme delivery.
The successful individual will join a high-performing executive team with a clearly defined pathway into a future Mega Projects Portfolio Leadership position upon successful project delivery.
The Opportunity
Reporting directly to the COO, the Project Director will take full lifecycle responsibility for the delivery of a major rail programme from construction through to commissioning and handover. You will provide strategic leadership across all delivery functions, ensuring safety, programme, commercial performance, stakeholder management and operational excellence are achieved throughout the project lifecycle.
This role requires an individual who has successfully delivered major rail infrastructure projects from a contractor environment, understands the realities of at-risk project delivery and has operated at executive level on large-scale multidisciplinary transportation programmes.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the end-to-end delivery of a major rail infrastructure programme valued at approximately $5 billion
- Provide executive oversight across civils, stations, systems, interfaces, testing and commissioning
- Drive project performance across safety, schedule, cost, quality and stakeholder outcomes
- Lead multidisciplinary project teams and major supply chain partners
- Manage complex client and stakeholder relationships
- Ensure robust commercial and risk management practices are embedded throughout delivery
- Champion collaborative behaviours across project partners and stakeholders
- Support the development of future organisational capability across the contractor's growing major projects portfolio
Essential Requirements
We are specifically seeking candidates who meet the following criteria:
- Minimum 15 years' experience working for major contractors within the rail, transportation or heavy infrastructure sector
- Proven experience delivering projects in an at-risk contracting environment
- Successfully led the full lifecycle completion of at least two major multidisciplinary rail projects, each project must have had a value of £500 million+ / $1 billion+
- Extensive experience across: Civil Infrastructure, Rail Stations, Rail Systems, Testing & Commissioning, Programme Integration
- Demonstrated experience on at least one project delivered through a collaborative contracting model such as: Alliancing, Progressive Design-Build, Cost Reimbursable / Target Cost arrangements, Other collaborative delivery frameworks

Candidates whose experience is primarily from a consultancy, engineering consultancy or client-side advisory background will not be considered. This opportunity is specifically targeted towards senior leaders from major contracting organisations with proven experience delivering large-scale rail infrastructure projects.
Ideal Background
Experience gained with leading international contractors delivering projects such as: High Speed Rail, Metro & Rapid Transit Systems, Major Urban Rail Programmes, Commuter Rail Networks, Integrated Transportation Infrastructure. Experience across Europe, the UK, Australia, North America, the Middle East or Asia-Pacific will be highly regarded.
