Are you an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer looking for a fresh challenge within a fast-paced, technically exciting process engineering environment? At NPP we're recruiting on behalf of a leading UK engineering services provider known for delivering complex projects across sectors such as food & drink, utilities, defence, aerospace, and nuclear.
This is a fantastic opportunity to join a specialist process team involved in full project lifecycle delivery - from concept and design to manufacture, installation and commissioning.
The Role:
As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you’ll be involved in the design and development of mechanical systems and components that underpin large-scale manufacturing and industrial process projects. From stainless steel vessels and process pipework to steel structures and plant layouts, you’ll play a vital role in shaping cutting-edge engineering solutions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Create and develop detailed 3D models and 2D fabrication drawings using Autodesk Inventor, Plant3D, AutoCAD, and P&ID tools
- Work closely with project teams including Process, Electrical and Systems Engineers to ensure seamless integration of mechanical designs
- Design pressure and non-pressure vessels, structural steelwork, process pipework and sheet metal fabrications
- Interpret P&IDs, PFDs, and technical documentation to produce accurate models and ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations
- Conduct site surveys and laser scans to support design development and system layout planning
- Prepare design documentation to support compliance with Supply of Machinery Regulations
- Support design reviews and present models and drawings using Navisworks or similar
- Participate in design risk assessments, HAZOPs, and ensure CAD outputs meet BS 8888 standards
- Mentor and support junior CAD Engineers and contribute to maintaining high-quality design standards across the team
Skills & Experience:
- Proven experience as a Mechanical Design or 3D CAD Engineer within the process or industrial sector
- Strong knowledge of process industry design standards, including familiarity with P&IDs and PFDs
- Proficiency in Autodesk Inventor, Vault, Plant 3D, and other AEC design software
- Experience designing piping systems and structural supports
- HNC or higher in a mechanically biased engineering discipline
- Ability to conduct basic structural hand calculations
- Comfortable working collaboratively with project teams and liaising with clients
- Detail-oriented with excellent problem-solving skills and communication abilities
