Purpose of Post:

To provide tailored support, methods, or approaches that meet individual learning needs, enabling students to achieve their full personal and academic potential.

Key Accountability and Responsibility to the Assistant Academic Manager for:

  • Academic Support & Individual Learning Plans: Develop, review, and monitor Individual Learning Plans (ILPs). Deliver one-to-one and group academic support sessions covering study skills, academic writing, referencing, assessment preparation, and research skills. Provide formative feedback on assessments and guide students in understanding summative feedback. Support students in understanding assessment briefs, learning outcomes, and grading criteria. Deliver academic workshops on referencing, plagiarism awareness, research techniques, presentation skills, and digital literacy. Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of academic support and student progression. Recommend relevant academic resources and learning materials. Collaborate with teaching teams to align academic support with programme expectations.
  • Attendance Monitoring, Engagement & Student Progression: Monitor student attendance and engagement using college systems. Follow procedures for contacting and supporting students with repeated absences. Record all interventions, student meetings, and agreed action plans. Identify "at-risk" learners early and escalate concerns where appropriate. Support the Assistant Academic Manager with ILP implementation and review. Contribute to retention and engagement strategies.
  • Communication, Coordination & Reporting: Liaise with academic staff, programme teams, and support services. Attend meetings, progress boards, and case conferences as required. Update student support records on systems such as VLE. Prepare reports on support trends, attendance risk indicators, and academic concerns. Communicate effectively with students, staff, and stakeholders.
  • Quality Assurance, Compliance & Professional Conduct: Support internal quality assurance processes and audits. Ensure all support activities comply with UWL Academic Regulations and NCL policies. Participate in mandatory training and CPD. Contribute to the continuous improvement of support services.
  • Other General College Duties: Support college operations and participate in enrolment, induction, and open days. Adhere to Health & Safety, Equality & Diversity, and Safeguarding policies. Demonstrate professionalism and positive conduct. Undertake duties as assigned by Directors or senior management.

Person Specification:

The Student Support Tutor (University Programmes) should possess:

Essential Characteristics: Relevant degree and/or professional qualification in education, learning development, academic skills, or student support, with evidence of ongoing CPD in inclusive or higher education practice. Demonstrable experience providing academic support to higher education students, including delivery of one-to-one and group sessions covering study skills, academic writing, referencing, assessment preparation, and research skills. Strong organisational, communication, and digital skills, including experience maintaining accurate student records, monitoring attendance and engagement, supporting at-risk learners, and using Microsoft 365 and VLEs effectively.

Desired Characteristics: Experience supporting mature, non-traditional, international, or Widening Access learners within validated university programmes. Understanding of higher education academic regulations, assessment processes, and internal quality assurance requirements. Experience contributing to retention, engagement, or progression initiatives, including reporting on student support trends or academic risk indicators.
