Field Service Engineer (Mechanical Bias) York-based | UK & Overseas travel
Full time, permanent role
Competitive salary + Overtime
Please Note: Applicants must be authorised to work in the UK.
Our client is a trusted UK-based engineering company representing several leading European machinery manufacturers. They specialise in the supply, installation and ongoing support of high-performance production line equipment, including conveyors and bespoke machinery, for the print, packaging and logistics sectors. Their strong reputation is built on technical excellence and long-standing customer relationships. As a growing business, they’re expanding their talented engineering team to keep pace with demand.
The Role
As a Field Service Engineer, you will take ownership of installation, commissioning, maintenance and breakdown support of complex electromechanical systems at customer sites. You’ll work both independently and as part of a wider engineering team, often representing the business on-site with key customers. This is a highly varied, field-based role for someone who enjoys problem-solving in real-world environments and adapting quickly to changing priorities. A key aspect of this position is significant flexibility around travel and working patterns. Work is driven by customer and operational requirements, which means travel can be unpredictable:
- Some assignments may require being away from home for several consecutive weeks
- Other periods may involve being home most nights
- Travel is sporadic and not fixed or rota-based
- Occasional weekend work and extended working days may be required
This role will suit someone who is comfortable with an on-demand travel schedule and enjoys the variety and independence that comes with field engineering. It will not suit candidates seeking a structured Monday–Friday, home-based routine. The ability to respond flexibly to travel requirements is considered just as important as technical capability.
Key Responsibilities
- Install and commission new production line machinery at customer sites
- Perform fault-finding, maintenance, and repair work on installed systems
- Support our internal workshop operations in York as needed
- Deliver operator training and ongoing technical support
- Work independently on assignments and collaborate with team members
- Accurately document all service visits and communicate effectively with customers
Benefits
- Competitive salary + overtime
- 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays
- Company van
- Pension scheme
- Flexible working arrangements where possible
- Comprehensive training on partner machinery
- Real career development and progression opportunities
- A rewarding, hands-on engineering role with plenty of variety
The Ideal Candidate
You’ll be a qualified and technically capable engineer who is adaptable, reliable, and comfortable working away from home when needed. Ideally, you’ll bring:
Essential:
- Strong mechanical engineering background (field service or maintenance preferred)
- Genuine willingness to travel extensively and work away at short notice
- Comfortable with irregular working patterns and extended time on-site
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings
- Self-sufficient and confident working alone on customer sites
Desirable:
- Basic electrical knowledge (not essential)
- Experience with pneumatics, sensors, inverters, or variable speed drives
- Background in installation, maintenance, or automation environments
You will also bring:
- A proactive, problem-solving mindset
- Strong communication skills with customer-facing experience
- A professional, can-do attitude when working on-site in demanding environments
- Genuine flexibility and willingness to adapt to changing requirements
If you're ready to take the next step in your engineering career, apply today and be part of this dynamic journey.
