We are looking for someone who is really great with people and has a strong customer service ethic, is well organised and likes being busy but is flexible and adaptable. If that’s you, this is a fantastic career for you.
We're looking for someone to cover clinics in the Bath & North East Somerset and West Wiltshire areas. This is a part time role, 3 days per week. You'll work mostly 08:15-16:15 with occasional Saturday mornings.
The role of diabetic eye screener is an important part of helping people living with diabetes. We screen eyes on a regular basis to find signs of diabetic retinopathy – a disease caused by changes to the blood vessels in the back of the eye due to diabetes. If untreated these changes can lead to sight loss. The screener takes photographs and OCT scans of the retina to check for signs of damage to the vessels, does an initial review of the images and sends them for full assessment (grading).
Responsibilities
- Each day, you run your own screening clinic which involves:
- Setting it up safely and working with the venue’s team
- Welcoming service users
- Undertaking general eye health checks
- Measuring visual acuity
- Giving eye pupil dilation drops
- Using photography and OCT equipment to take photos and scans of the retina
- Daily equipment cleaning/checks and occasional fault-finding/maintenance (with training)
Clinics are busy but it is a rewarding role where you get to use your people and organisational skills to ensure the day runs smoothly and you have all the stock and equipment needed.
Qualifications
- Full training is given if you’re new to screening, so no experience is needed but it is an advantage if you come from a screening or healthcare background.
- You will be enrolled on the national Health Screening Diploma course, which combines on the job training with personal study.
- You can use your initiative.
- Confident with people and you have patience and understanding to deal with service users from all backgrounds.
- Travel is part of a normal day (to/from various clinic venues near your home base) so a full driving licence and access to a car is essential.
- You have a great eye for detail and a thorough approach to carrying out your work.
- Minimum 5 GCSEs to include literacy, numeracy and using IT, or equivalent experience.
