NCS has been providing product-based IT solutions to Federal and military customers since 1996. These solutions center on a wide range of hardware from end-user devices to rugged mobile computers for field operations, and networking, compute, and storage equipment for integration into military platforms. We have built up a substantial integration, manufacturing, quality, and logistics infrastructure and have developed robust business practices to compete in markets including Federal civilian agencies, all three branches of the military, and the System Integrator community serving them.
In October 2023, NCS moved into a state-of-the-art 108,000 square foot facility in Innovation Park @ Prince William, Manassas, Virginia. This facility supports our growth and diversification aligned with our Go-To Market strategy focused on IT product-based services and solutions for defined addressable markets over the next five years.
The Mechanical Engineering Manager will lead and manage a group of Mechanical Engineers who design structures made of sheet metal and 3D printed plastic to house compute and storage servers and other electronic sub-systems. These servers must operate reliably under a wide range of environmental conditions in compliance with customer requirements and military standards. The role requires a diverse mix of technical, managerial, project, and people-management skills, with flexibility to respond to wide-ranging customer requirements including schedule challenges.
Responsibilities
- People Management: Lead, manage, and mentor a team; nurture a culture that encourages creativity and a proactive, collaborative spirit.
- Team Management: Assign work based on skills and experience, hold periodic team meetings, and ensure resources are available to meet critical schedule milestones; monitor projects for on-time delivery and budget adherence, with corrective actions as needed.
- Technical Management: Review technical drawings, conduct peer reviews to identify risks, and provide hands-on design support as needed to maintain momentum.
- Quality Management: Ensure adherence to ISO design procedures and adapt procedures to changing requirements; promote best practices and share innovative design techniques.
- Manufacturing: Ensure smooth transfer of design data to Manufacturing Engineering; foster collaboration for feedback incorporation to improve designs.
- Customer and Vendor Management: Conduct technical and project briefings for customers and maintain relationships with third-party vendors.
- Administration: Conduct annual performance reviews and perform other administrative duties necessary for team efficiency.
- Security Management: Ensure compliance with security procedures including handling of CUI materials and take proactive measures to minimize impact on productivity.
Qualifications
- Five to ten years of experience leading Mechanical Engineering teams.
- Proven experience designing mechanical enclosures housing electronic sub-assemblies to meet MIL-STD requirements (rackmount chassis for compute/storage servers and cooling).
- Experience with MIL-STD 810G/H testing procedures and related facilities, equipment, and tools.
- Experience in electronic packaging, electro-mechanical design, sheet metal fabrication techniques, and 3D modeling concepts.
- Ability to interpret customer ideas into product design requirements and, when necessary, recommend design changes (ANSI Y14.5).
- Ability to model project costs in terms of time, materials, and indirect costs for budgeting and NRE purposes.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong work ethic and willingness to exert extra effort to meet deadlines; ability to multitask effectively.
- Must maintain a full-time presence in the office and demonstrate professional appearance and attitude.
- B.S. or M.S. in Mechanical Engineering; U.S. Citizenship required.
- SECRET or higher clearance strongly preferred.
Physical Demands
This role operates in a hybrid environment spanning an office, on-site engineering labs, and a manufacturing floor within a secure facility. Regular collaboration with engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams to support design reviews, prototype builds, and production activities in compliance with ISO and military standards is required.
