Purpose of the role

As Academic English Tutor you will be part of a team of Study Support Advisors. You will provide English language support to students whose first language is not English. This role is particularly suited to someone who has experience of teaching English as a second language and is enthusiastic about helping students meet their academic demands.

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Deliver high-quality teaching across a range of settings, including seminars, workshops, small group tutorials, and embedded in-module support sessions.
  • Provide tailored 1:1 and small-group academic English support, focusing on writing, reading, listening, speaking, and presentation skills within an academic context.
  • Support students in developing key academic literacies, including critical analysis, argumentation, referencing (e.g. Harvard), and academic integrity.
  • Design and deliver workshops on topics such as essay writing, report writing, research skills, and effective communication in assessments.
  • Develop and curate inclusive, accessible English language learning resources aligned with programme curricula and assessment requirements.
  • Collaborate with academic staff to embed English language support within subject modules and ensure alignment with learning outcomes.
  • Provide constructive, developmental feedback on students’ written and oral work to support progression and attainment.
  • Monitor student engagement and progress, identifying those at risk and referring to appropriate academic or pastoral support services where necessary.
  • Maintain accurate records of student interactions and support sessions in line with institutional policies.
  • Contribute to enhancing the student experience by fostering a supportive and inclusive learning environment.
  • Support the delivery of induction and transition activities, including orientation sessions, introductory workshops, and early-stage academic skills provision to help students adapt to UK higher education expectations.
  • Provide early diagnostic support during induction to identify students’ English language needs and tailor ongoing support accordingly.
  • Engage in continuous professional development and contribute to the sharing of good practice within the Study Support team.

Skills and Qualifications

  • TESOL/CELTA or other English teaching qualification.
  • Experience in teaching English language with relevant delivery, assessment, and student support.
