New City College are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Apprentice Maintenance Assistant to join our Estates team. This is an excellent entry‑level opportunity for someone who enjoys hands‑on, practical work and wants to develop skills in facilities and maintenance.

Training course: Property maintenance operative (level 2)

Hours: Monday to Friday 8am‑5pm, with a one‑hour lunch break. 35 hours per week.

Start: 7 September 2026.

Duration: 2 years.

Work: Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands‑on experience.

What you’ll do at work:

  • Carry out general maintenance and minor works, including lamp changes, basic plumbing, small repairs, decorating and assembling furniture.
  • Monitor the condition of buildings, fittings, equipment and outdoor areas, reporting defects and assisting with repairs as appropriate.
  • Support porterage, mailroom and facilities tasks such as moving furniture, handling post, waste disposal and recycling.
  • Assist with grounds and cleaning duties, ensuring entrances and external spaces are safe, tidy and clear of hazards such as litter, leaves, snow or blockages.
  • Maintain safe working practices, store equipment securely, work flexibly across college sites, and undertake additional responsibilities (e.g., Fire Marshal or First Aider) once trained.
  • Attend day release sessions at NCC Hackney Campus (postcode N1 6HQ) to study and gain professional knowledge.

Where you’ll work: Borders Lane, Loughton, Essex, IG10 3SA

Training: Apprenticeships include time away from working for specialist training. You’ll study to gain professional knowledge and skills.

Responsibilities include:

  • Plan the sequence of work required to carry out routine property maintenance operations.
  • Identify and select the appropriate materials and components for property maintenance tasks, ensuring they are compliant with relevant regulatory requirements and manufacturer’s specifications.
  • Comply with statutory health and safety regulations, risk assessments and organisational safeguards.
  • Use personal protective equipment, signage, barriers and access equipment and ensure the work area is prepared and reinstated.
  • Select and use work tools and equipment for property maintenance tasks, applying all safeguards and ensuring correct functioning.
  • Safely isolate and secure electrical or electronic supplies prior to performing property maintenance operations.
  • Apply and implement routine emergency system checks, testing and routine maintenance, identifying and reporting faults as required.
  • Perform maintenance and repairs to plumbing, drainage, environmental and energy management systems, including fault identification, safe isolation of supply, replacing components and clearing blockages.
  • Use carpentry and joinery skills to perform repairs to windows, doors, glazing units and their fittings.
  • Perform plastered surface repairs, painting and decorating, tiling and flooring repairs, and address minor defects in masonry, roofing, fencing or railing, groundwork or landscaping.
  • Record and report information using digital and written techniques and inspect own work to ensure it is delivered to given specifications.
  • Comply with environmental regulations, segregate resources for reuse, recycling and disposal.
  • Use and adapt communication methods for different situations, maintain customer service, and escalate issues beyond competence and authority.

Requirements:

  • GCSE in English Language (grade 3 and above or equivalent)
  • GCSE in Maths (grade 3 and above or equivalent)
  • Share any other relevant qualifications or industry experience; the apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.
