New City College is looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Apprentice Maintenance Assistant to join the Estates team. This is an excellent entry‑level opportunity for someone who enjoys hands‑on, practical work and wants to develop skills in facilities and maintenance.

Training course: Property maintenance operative (level 2)

Hours: Monday to Friday 8am‑5pm, including a one‑hour lunch break. Work week: 35 hours.

Start date: 7 September 2026. Duration: 2 years.

Responsibilities:

  • Carry out general maintenance and minor works, including lamp changes, basic plumbing, small repairs, decorating and assembling furniture.
  • Monitor the condition of buildings, fittings, equipment and outdoor areas, reporting defects and assisting with repairs as appropriate.
  • Support porterage, mailroom and facilities tasks such as moving furniture, handling post, waste disposal and recycling.
  • Assist with grounds and cleaning duties, ensuring entrances and external spaces are safe, tidy and clear of hazards such as litter, leaves, snow or blockages.
  • Maintain safe working practices, store equipment securely, work flexibly across college sites, and undertake additional responsibilities (e.g., Fire Marshal or First Aider) once trained.
  • Plan and carry out routine property maintenance operations, selecting appropriate materials and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Comply with statutory health and safety regulations, risk assessments and building regulations.
  • Use safe working practices, PPE, signage, barriers and access equipment, and restore work areas to required standards.
  • Isolate and secure electrical or electronic supplies before performing maintenance.
  • Perform routine emergency system checks, testing, and maintenance, reporting faults as required.
  • Carry out repairs to plumbing, drainage, energy management, windows, doors, plastered surfaces, painting, tiling and flooring as necessary.
  • Use carpentry and joinery skills for repairs to windows, doors, glazing and associated fittings.
  • Record and report information using digital and written techniques.
  • Inspect work to ensure delivery to specifications.
  • Segregate resources for reuse, recycling and disposal.
  • Adapt communication methods for different situations and provide customer feedback, maintaining customer service.
  • Escalate issues beyond their level of competence and authority.

Training: Attend specialist training as part of the apprenticeship. Study to gain professional knowledge and skills in property maintenance, including health and safety, technical requirements and practical repair work. Work at the Day release to attend college at NCC Hackney Campus (postcode: N1 6HQ) as required.
