You will join our Field-based Engineering team of approximately 200 Engineers and be ultimately responsible for installing, repairing & maintaining our medical systems. You will provide vital technical service support to our customers and work at hospital sites throughout the UK initially focusing on sites within London and South England region.

There will also be annual generous performance based pay increases throughout the Apprenticeship. In year 2, you will be provided a van for business use for the remainder of your apprenticeship.

What you’ll do at work

Siemens Healthineers is one of the world’s largest suppliers to the healthcare industry and a trendsetter in medical imaging, laboratory diagnostics and medical information technology.

We have an exciting opportunity for enthusiastic and aspiring individuals to join our Field Service Engineer Apprenticeship based in the London and Southern England area, beginning in August 2024. This engineering apprenticeship will involve dedicated training on your journey to becoming a skilled Field Service Engineer in the healthcare industry and offers a favourable apprenticeship salary and benefits.

In this Field Service Engineer Apprenticeship role, you will join our field-based engineering team of approximately 200 engineers and be ultimately responsible for installing, repairing, and maintaining our medical systems. You will provide vital technical service support to our customers and work at hospital sites throughout the UK, initially focusing on customer sites within the London and South England area.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Develop an understanding of relevant industry health and safety standards, regulations, and environmental and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintenance and operational practices, processes and procedures cover a range of plant and equipment.
  • Locate, and rectify faults in plant and equipment.
  • Communicate with and provide information to stakeholders in line with personal roles and responsibilities.
  • Read, understand and interpret information and work in compliance with technical specifications and supporting documentation.
  • Inspect and maintain appropriate plant and equipment to meet operational requirements.
  • Assess and test the performance and condition of plant and equipment.
  • Communicate, handover and confirm that the appropriate engineering process has been completed to specification.
  • Position, assemble, install and dismantle electrical plant and equipment, which may include motors, switchgear, cables and conductors, to agreed specifications.
  • Diagnose and determine the cause of faults in electrical plant and equipment.
  • Replace, repair or remove components in the electrical plant and equipment and ensure its return to operational condition.

You can also expect the following:

  • Travel to sites across the South of England.
  • Attend other Siemens manufacturing sites across the country on temporary short-term assignments.
  • Visit the Siemens Healthineers Customer Care Centre in Camberley, Surrey.
  • Travel abroad to the Siemens Training Centres in Germany and the US as required.

Training

An apprenticeship includes regular training with a college or other training organisation. At least 20% of your working hours will be spent training or studying.

Your training course

Mechatronics Maintenance Technician (level 3) – Equal to A level

Course contents

  • Use information technology, for example to create documentation, communication and information management.
  • Obtain, read and interpret task related documentation, such as work instructions, quality control documents, drawings, operation manuals, specifications and service manuals.
  • Record information for example job sheets, risk assessments, equipment service records, test results, handover documents and manufacturers’ documentation, asset management records, work sheets, checklists, waste environmental records and any legal reporting requirements.
  • Conduct initial assessment of equipment that requires maintenance.
  • Formulate plans setting out the methodology of the maintenance activity including timescales and resources.
  • Select, prepare and use material, consumables, tools and equipment.
  • Comply with health and safety regulations and organisational requirements applicable in the workplace. For example, COSHH, PUWER, LOLER, PPE and applying safe systems of work.
  • Apply dynamic risk assessment, hazard identification and risk mitigation principles and techniques.
  • Apply isolation principles and techniques to equipment undergoing maintenance, including dissipation of stored energies as required.
  • Manufacture, repair and refurbish components using hand and machine tools.
  • Restore the workplace on completion of the maintenance activity. Handover resources, consumables and equipment to process owner.
  • Apply the techniques and processes used in reactive maintenance and repair activities on complex engineered systems such as electrical, electronic, mechanical, fluid power and control systems.
  • Produce, maintain, update, record and store documentation including electronic items such as PLC and robot programmes.
  • Apply techniques and processes used in planned and preventative maintenance activities on engineered systems such as electrical, electronic, mechanical, fluid power and control systems.
  • Apply functional testing and checking techniques and processes after maintenance interventions, and handover to the operational team.
  • Apply techniques and processes used in condition monitoring, non-destructive or sensory testing. Record findings and take necessary actions.
  • Apply calculation techniques such as, feeds, speeds, tolerances, electrical calculations using Ohms law, power calculations and cable sizing calculations.
  • Select, use and confirm calibration of electrical and mechanical testing and measuring equipment.
  • Produce sketches or drawings to support maintenance activities.
  • Communicate in writing. Prepare communications, documents and reports on technical matters.
  • Segregate, separate and dispose of waste streams and by-products.
  • Apply 4S or 5S principles of housekeeping to the work environment.
  • Identify opportunities and make recommendations to improve operational performance.
  • Apply continuous improvement techniques.
  • Communicate with others verbally. Negotiate with colleagues or stakeholders. For example, to access equipment or arrange access to equipment.
  • Follow equity, diversity and inclusion procedures.
  • Carry out and record planned and unplanned learning and development activities.
  • Apply fault finding techniques used in reactive maintenance on complex integrated systems including half split, input output, six point technique, function or performance testing, unit or component substitution and equipment diagnostics.

  • Level 3 Mechatronics Maintenance Technician Apprenticeship Standard.

To include:

  • Practical Skills Training to be delivered at New City College Rainham campus.
  • BTEC Level 3 Diploma to be studied at College on a day-release basis over the first 2 years of the programme.
  • Portfolio of competence based evidence to meet the Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours criteria as outlined in the Standard.
  • End Point Assessment.
  • Level 2 Functional Skills in maths and English (if required).

GCSE or equivalent in:

  • Maths (grade 5)

Other requirements

For this role you will require a full driving licence to proceed in your role in the business as you will be travelling to various sites. We will provide a ÂŁ500 fund to cover driving lessons, theory test and practical test fees if you do not yet have your driving license. The expectation will be a full licence pass within the first 9 months.
