Overview
The agent in this position will have educational responsibilities in all phases of livestock production, forage, field crops, and waste management. The successful candidate must be able to conduct educational programs that focus on the profitability and sustainability of North Carolina livestock, utilizing best practices based on research, including the adoption of proven technology, business, and financial practices. The successful candidate will be responsible for applied research development in the program area.
Primary Function Of Organizational Unit
North Carolina Cooperative Extension gives our residents easy access to the resources and expertise of NC State University and NC A&T State University. Through educational programs, publications, and events, Cooperative Extension field faculty deliver unbiased, research-based information to North Carolina citizens.
Haywood County, Waynesville, Maggie Valley, Lake Junaluska, Canton, Clyde, Blue Ridge Parkway, and related communities are part of the service area.
Duties And Responsibilities
- Provide leadership in planning, implementing, marketing, and evaluating educational programs and activities with measurable impacts.
- Be a team player and support the total Extension program.
- Network with broad audiences, customers, volunteers, Extension Specialists, and the local Extension staff.
- Actively seek outside resources to enhance the program.
- Develop and implement innovative strategies for presenting educational programs.
- Lead development, implementation, and evaluation of an effective livestock educational program to meet county needs.
- Demonstrate responsible, self-motivated work with strong relationship skills and a background in livestock production and 4-H youth livestock development.
- Include responsibilities for forages as part of the role.
Other Work/Responsibilities
- Knowledge of cattle production (beef and dairy) and small livestock operations (backyard poultry, fiber animals, niche meat production) is necessary to address the county’s educational needs.
- Collaborate with 4-H staff and volunteers involved with youth livestock programming.
- Serve on the Haywood County Fair Planning Committee.
- Coordinate all youth livestock and poultry shows for the annual county fair.
Requirements and Preferences
- Work Schedule: 8:00am-5:00pm, Monday-Friday. Nights and weekends as required.
- Minimum Experience/Education: A Bachelor’s degree with GPA 2.5 overall or 3.0 in an agricultural or related field; or Bachelor’s with partial Master’s coursework (3.0 GPA) in an agricultural or related field; or Master’s degree in an agricultural or related field.
- Department Required Skills: Frequent travel within the county and occasional travel outside the county; strong background in livestock production and 4-H youth livestock development.
Compensation
Anticipated Hiring Range: $40,000-$50,000. Recruitment details: Internal Transfer Only No. Job Open Date 10/09/2025.
