As a Control Systems Engineer you will be responsible for the design, development, commissioning and ongoing support of autopilot and associated control systems for uncrewed surface vessel applications. Additionally, you will be involved in programming PLC system to support interfacing of our remote vessel logging system to vessel automation systems.

You will need a high proficiency in PLC coding – specifically CODESYS 3 and structured text. You will also need a good understanding of standard automation communication protocols. You will provide technical expertise in the integration, configuration and optimisation of control solutions, ensuring effective communication with vessel propulsion, navigation and onboard systems. The role requires both theoretical and practical engineering capability, with responsibility for delivering high‑quality technical outputs in line with project, safety and regulatory requirements.

Key elements of the role:

  • Maintain and enhance system models, simulations and control algorithms using MATLAB/Simulink
  • Develop and maintain interface code to support communication with vessel systems and operators
  • Implement real‑time and deterministic software solutions using CODESYS Structured Text
  • Build and maintain testbeds and development environments for system validation and testing
  • Occasional visits to customer premises or vessels e.g. to support a survey or to test new solutions
  • Liaise with clients, suppliers and internal stakeholders to ensure technical solutions meet operational and commercial requirements
  • Prepare technical documentation, reports and presentations as required
  • Attend project meetings and contribute to technical reviews
  • Provide ongoing technical support for deployed systems, including remote diagnostics and on‑site interventions where necessary.

Experience / Skills Required:

  • Degree in Mechanical / Electrical / Electronic Engineering, Control Engineering, Robotics or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Demonstrable experience in control systems engineering within marine, industrial automation or related sectors.
  • Proficiency with PLC programming using CODESYS Structured Text with a strong understanding of object‑oriented programming and real‑time software implementation.
  • Experience with MATLAB/Simulink for modelling, simulation and control algorithm development.
  • Practical experience with industrial and marine communication protocols (e.g., Modbus, CAN, NMEA0183).
  • Ability to work autonomously, manage workload effectively and collaborate with international multidisciplinary teams.
  • Version control software (e.g. GIT)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Full clean driving licence.
