The Hardware Engineer II designs, develops, and enhances embedded electronic systems, contributing to schematic creation, PCB layout, and overall hardware architecture. This role leads prototype bring‑up activities, applying structured debugging and root‑cause analysis to validate circuit behavior and optimize performance. The engineer plans and executes comprehensive verification activities – including functional, environmental, and EMC testing – to ensure designs meet reliability, regulatory, and quality requirements. They also provide support to sustaining and production teams through component evaluations, failure analysis, and close collaboration with manufacturing and suppliers. This includes addressing DFM/DFT considerations, improving build quality, and maintaining clear, accurate documentation. Working closely with cross‑functional engineering, quality, and operations teams, the Hardware Engineer II helps integrate new hardware into products and production workflows. The role drives continuous improvement by refining design practices, strengthening test methodologies, and promoting consistency across hardware platforms. By applying sound engineering judgement and mentoring junior engineers, the Hardware Engineer II enhances product robustness and contributes to the organization’s long‑term hardware strategy.
Primary Responsibilities
- Design and develop electronic hardware – including schematics, board‑level architecture, component selection, and PCB layout – ensuring performance, reliability, manufacturability, and compliance with organizational standards.
- Lead prototype bring‑up, debugging, and root‑cause analysis using appropriate lab tools and structured engineering methods.
- Plan and execute verification activities such as functional testing, environmental evaluation, and EMC‑related assessments; drive corrective actions where required.
- Produce and maintain clear engineering documentation, including schematics, BOMs, test requirements, and manufacturing‑ready deliverables.
- Participate in design reviews and contribute to continuous improvement of design practices, tools, and engineering processes.
- Collaborate with manufacturing, suppliers, and test engineering to address DFM/DFT considerations and support yield and build quality improvements.
- Support sustaining engineering through component evaluations, issue reproduction, failure analysis, and implementation of corrective and preventive actions.
Job Specifications
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering (or related).
- 3+ years of professional hardware design experience.
- Proficiency with ECAD tools (e.g., Altium Designer, OrCAD, or Mentor) and experience using circuit‑level and system‑level simulation tools (e.g., SPICE, HyperLynx, or LTspice).
- Strong problem solving and troubleshooting skills.
- Strong communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with modern hardware development workflows, including version control, issue tracking, and collaborative engineering processes.
- Background in designing for robustness, including power management considerations, signal integrity, and effective EMC/EMI mitigation strategies.
- Exposure to embedded systems concepts such as microcontrollers, digital interfaces, sensor integration, and secure or reliable hardware design practices.
- Familiarity with DFM/DFT principles and collaboration with manufacturing or test engineering teams to support scalable production.
- Understanding of common communication interfaces used in complex systems and awareness of relevant compliance or certification pathways.
