A Specialist Civil Engineering Contractor who operates on Heavy Civils & Major Tunnelling projects across the UK is looking to hire an experienced Senior SHE Manager to lead safety excellence across major civils and infrastructure projects in the UK. This is a senior, hands-on leadership role suited to someone who thrives in a fast-paced, high-responsibility environment happy with UK travel.

As Senior SHE Manager, you will oversee SHE performance across all the group's projects and depots, ensuring full compliance with ISO standards and client requirements. You will develop and deliver audit programmes, lead investigations, manage SHE Advisors, and act as a trusted advisor to the SHE Director and operational leadership. This role requires a high level of visibility across sites and therefore involves regular nationwide travel, and prolonged periods away from home.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leadership & Culture: Lead by example, embodying the LIFE culture and inspiring excellence in SHEQ performance. Manage, mentor, and develop SHE Advisors, ensuring the team is deployed effectively to meet business needs. Promote an environment where health, safety, and wellbeing are prioritised at every level.
  • Compliance & Auditing: Develop and deliver programme audits across projects and depots. Ensure compliance with ISO 45001, ISO 45003 and internal SHEQ standards. Maintain accurate, high-quality records and prepare detailed reports for management and stakeholders.
  • Risk, Incident & Performance Management: Conduct and review risk assessments, RAMS and investigations. Ensure all incidents, near misses and safety concerns are reported promptly. Support the preservation of incident scenes and evidence where required. Challenge poor performance and take decisive action to address unsafe practices.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Work closely with project teams, subcontractors, and clients to promote safe working environments. Support and influence improvements in environmental performance. Encourage site feedback through observation cards and open communication.

To be suitable for this Senior SHE Manager role you will have:

  • Minimum 10 years' experience working in SHE roles.
  • Strong background in major civils, ideally including tunnelling or similarly complex environments.
  • Demonstrable experience managing SHE teams and high-risk construction projects.
  • NEBOSH qualification (or equivalent) - CMIOSH strongly preferred.
  • Lead Auditor qualification (ISO 45001).
  • Environmental qualification (e.g., IEMA).
  • Strong knowledge of ISO 45001 and ideally ISO 45003.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Ability to work long hours and maintain high performance standards.
  • Strong analytical, communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.

Desirable:

  • TOPSET or equivalent accident investigation qualification.
  • CSCS card.
  • Experience in concrete frame or large-scale civils environments.
