Are you an experienced Rail Engineering Professional looking to work with a leading UK rail freight operator? This is an exciting opportunity to join a company recognised for excellence in freight operations, including intermodal and heavy haul services across the UK and Europe. Recently awarded “Rail Freight Company of the Year” (2025), the business places safety, reliability, and innovation at the heart of its operations.

As the Diesel Loco Production Support Engineer, you’ll be part of a national engineering team supporting the performance, safety, and reliability of the diesel locomotive fleet.

Key responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement engineering solutions to improve fleet performance and reduce maintenance costs.
  • Review and update maintenance specifications to ensure compliance with railway standards.
  • Support the creation and delivery of Asset Management Plans covering fleet safety and reliability.
  • Provide technical guidance to depot engineers and technicians.
  • Conduct root-cause analysis on faults or incidents and recommend corrective actions.
  • Attend engineering meetings and site visits as required to support fleet performance.
  • Provide on-call technical support during incidents affecting the diesel fleet.
  • Identify deficiencies in maintenance practices, materials, or design and propose improvements.
  • Support fleet modification and upgrade projects, ensuring technical standards are maintained.
  • Liaise with stakeholders, including depot teams, suppliers, and contractors, to maintain engineering standards.
  • Maintain accurate records and reports on fleet performance, maintenance, and modifications.

Skills and experience required:

  • Demonstrable experience with traction and rolling stock, preferably diesel locomotives.
  • HNC (or equivalent) in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
  • Knowledge of safety management systems and railway maintenance standards.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Chartered Engineer status desirable but not essential.
