The company operates within the civil engineering and infrastructure sector, delivering major construction and tunnelling projects. The role sits within a major project environment, supporting operational teams and working closely with project management, site teams, clients and subcontractors to maintain high standards of health, safety and sustainability.

The Senior Health and Safety Advisor will lead and support health and safety across major infrastructure projects, providing guidance and leadership to operational teams throughout construction. The role will involve working closely with directors, managers, supervisors, site teams and clients to ensure statutory, project and company health and safety requirements are met. You will also take responsibility for inspections, audits, incident investigations, H&S reporting, improvement plans and safety initiatives across the project.

The key responsibilities for this role are:

  • Lead best practice across health, safety and sustainability
  • Advise directors, managers and supervisors on their H&S responsibilities
  • Liaise regularly with the client and build effective working relationships
  • Lead health and safety improvement projects and initiatives
  • Ensure appropriate management controls are in place
  • Support site management teams with H&S compliance
  • Lead junior H&S Advisors where required
  • Carry out site inspections, surveillance and audits
  • Follow up on actions identified through inspections and audits
  • Lead and support accident and incident investigations
  • Analyse H&S data to identify trends and areas for improvement
  • Develop lessons learned sessions, campaigns and improvement plans
  • Support the development and delivery of project inductions
  • Prepare and review H&S plans, procedures and method statements
  • Maintain accurate H&S records and documentation
  • Prepare reports, presentations and project information
  • Monitor compliance with relevant project KPIs
  • Stop work where health and safety requirements are in question

Experience required for this role includes:

  • Extensive experience working within a health and safety role
  • Experience within the tunnelling industry is preferred
  • Relevant senior-level H&S membership or qualifications, such as IOSH, NEBOSH, IEMA or CQI
  • Strong understanding of ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and BS OHSAS 18001 standards
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Office packages, including Outlook, Excel and Word
  • Commercial and contractual awareness

Desirable knowledge, skills and experience include:

  • Experience leading health and safety teams or junior H&S Advisors
  • Experience delivering H&S improvement plans and campaigns
  • Experience managing accident and incident investigations
  • Experience within major tunnelling or infrastructure projects
  • Knowledge of Visio and Microsoft Project
