Assistant Quantity Surveyor / Quantity Surveyor
Location: Hertfordshire (Kings Langley, Welwyn Garden City, South Mimms, Stevenage & Hertford Depots)
Salary: Up to £47,000 per annum
Contract Type: Permanent
Hybrid Working: Up to 2 days working from home following successful completion of probation (3 months)
About the Role
We are seeking an enthusiastic and proactive Assistant Quantity Surveyor or Quantity Surveyor to join an established commercial team supporting a major highways term maintenance contract with an annual turnover of approximately £80 million.
This is an excellent opportunity for an ambitious commercial professional looking to develop their career within a fast-paced highways and infrastructure environment. The successful candidate will work across a diverse portfolio of reactive and planned maintenance projects, supporting the delivery of essential highway services throughout the region.
The role offers exposure to a high volume of projects and opportunities to work closely with Senior Quantity Surveyors, operational teams, subcontractors and key stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities

Assisting in the commercial management of multiple highways maintenance projects.

Managing the commercial process from procurement through to final account.

Producing and monitoring monthly Cost Value Reconciliations (CVRs).

Preparing applications for payment and supporting valuation submissions.

Monthly forecasting and financial reporting.
-
Managing subcontractor procurement, payments and account administration.
-
Identifying and managing Early Warning Notices and Compensation Events.
-
Supporting contract administration under NEC contracts.

Assisting Senior Quantity Surveyors with commercial reporting and project controls.

Contributing to cost management, risk mitigation and profitability improvements.

Liaising with operational teams to ensure commercial processes are adhered to.

Supporting estimating activities where required.

Winter maintenance and gritting operations

Street lighting projects

Reactive maintenance works

Planned maintenance programmes
Candidate Requirements
Essential
-
Degree, HND or equivalent qualification in Quantity Surveying.

Strong Excel skills and confidence working with commercial data.

Good commercial awareness and understanding of construction processes.

Excellent communication and organisational skills.
-
Ability to manage multiple workstreams in a fast-paced environment.

Team-oriented approach with strong relationship-building skills.
-
Methodical, enthusiastic and proactive attitude.
Desirable
-
Minimum 3 years' Quantity Surveying experience.

Experience within highways, infrastructure or civil engineering projects.

Experience working on term maintenance contracts.
-
Knowledge of NEC3 and/or NEC4 contracts.

Estimating experience.

Understanding of Compensation Events and Applications for Payment.

CPA and SAP system experience.
-
MSc in Quantity Surveying.
-
Civil Engineering qualification.
Transferable Experience Considered
Applications are welcomed from Quantity Surveyors working in alternative construction sectors who can demonstrate relevant transferable skills and a strong commercial understanding.
