The Opportunity

We’re looking for an experienced Health, Safety & Environmental Manager to join an established construction and fit-out business, taking ownership of health, safety and environmental standards across its operations.

This is a hands-on role combining site-based activity with the management and continual improvement of HSE policies, procedures and systems. Working closely with the Managing Director, Contracts Managers and Site Managers, you’ll play a key role in ensuring projects are delivered safely, compliantly and to the highest standards.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys being out on site, building relationships with operational teams and driving genuine improvements in health, safety and environmental performance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Take ownership of the company’s Health, Safety & Environmental management systems, policies and procedures.
  • Carry out regular site inspections and audits, identifying areas for improvement and ensuring corrective actions are completed.
  • Prepare, review and maintain Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS), Construction Phase Plans and COSHH assessments.
  • Manage compliance with CDM 2015 and relevant health, safety and environmental legislation.
  • Maintain and develop ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 management systems, supporting internal audits and external certification requirements.
  • Investigate accidents, incidents and near misses, identifying root causes and implementing preventative measures.
  • Provide practical HSE guidance, training and support to Contracts Managers, Site Managers, supervisors and subcontractors.
  • Monitor subcontractor compliance and challenge unsafe working practices where necessary.
  • Oversee environmental controls, including waste management, pollution prevention and spill-control arrangements.
  • Monitor training requirements, occupational health risks and employee competence.
  • Report on HSE performance, audit findings, incidents and improvement initiatives to senior management.

About You

To be successful in this role, you’ll have a strong background in health and safety within construction, refurbishment, fit-out, maintenance or a similar contracting environment.

Essential requirements:

  • A relevant Level 6 Occupational Health & Safety qualification, such as a NEBOSH Level 6 Diploma, IOSH Level 6 Diploma, relevant Level 6 NVQ or equivalent.
  • Appropriate IOSH membership, with Chartered or Certified membership advantageous.
  • At least five years’ relevant Health & Safety experience, including substantial experience in a construction or contracting environment.
  • Strong working knowledge of CDM 2015, RAMS, Construction Phase Plans and site inspections.
  • Practical knowledge of ISO 45001 and ISO 14001.
  • A relevant CSCS card and current First Aid certificate.
  • Excellent communication, organisation and reporting skills.
  • A full UK driving licence and willingness to travel to sites nationwide.
  • Environmental management, fire safety, internal auditing or lead auditor qualifications would also be advantageous.
