Role Purpose: The Draughtsperson plays a critical role in the successful delivery of complex heavy engineering projects, transforming engineering intent into precise, high‑quality drawings that drive fabrication, construction, and installation outcomes. This position sits at the heart of the build strategy, requiring strong technical judgment, deep drafting expertise, and a sound understanding of engineering principles. The Draughtsperson ensures that designs are not only accurate, but buildable, compliant, and optimised for manufacturing and site execution. Operating with a high degree of autonomy, the role partners closely with engineers, project managers, and production teams to ensure that drawing outputs support safety, quality, schedule, and cost objectives across the project lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities:

  • Produce accurate, detailed 2D and 3D engineering drawings for heavy engineering projects, including structural steelwork, mechanical assemblies, plant equipment, and large‑scale industrial systems.
  • Develop fabrication, assembly, and installation drawings that clearly communicate engineering intent and meet project, client, and regulatory requirements.
  • Translate complex design concepts, calculations, and specifications into practical, manufacturable solutions.
  • Collaborate closely with engineers, construction teams, and project stakeholders to resolve design challenges and improve constructability.
  • Review, revise, and update drawings in response to design changes, site feedback, and client requirements, maintaining strict document control.
  • Ensure all drawing outputs comply with relevant standards, codes, and safety regulations (e.g., ISO, ASME, AWS or equivalents).
  • Prepare Bills of Materials (BOMs) and support material take‑offs to enable accurate procurement and cost control.
  • Provide drafting support during fabrication and installation phases, assisting with technical clarification and issue resolution.
  • Maintain drawing registers, revision histories, and documentation systems to a high professional standard.
  • Actively contribute to the continuous improvement of drafting standards, templates, tools, and workflows.

Knowledge, Skills & Experience: This role requires a strong foundation of technical knowledge and practical experience. These capabilities are essential to success.

Essential Knowledge & Technical Expertise:

  • Proven experience as a Draughtsperson within heavy engineering, fabrication, mining, power generation, oil & gas, or industrial construction environments.
  • Advanced proficiency in CAD software (e.g. AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Inventor or similar), with the ability to work efficiently in both 2D and 3D environments.
  • Demonstrated experience producing detailed fabrication and construction‑ready drawings.
  • Strong understanding of engineering materials, tolerances, welding symbols, manufacturing processes, and assembly methods.
  • Solid knowledge of relevant engineering standards, codes, and compliance requirements.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply engineering specifications, calculations, and technical documentation accurately.

Key Skills & Abilities:

  • High attention to detail with a commitment to accuracy, quality, and consistency.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills, with the ability to identify issues early and propose practical solutions.
  • Effective communication skills, enabling clear technical discussions with engineers, fabricators, and site teams.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and work independently with minimal supervision.
  • A continuous improvement mindset, contributing to better ways of working across drafting and build strategy activities.

Predominantly office‑based, with collaboration across engineering, fabrication, and project teams. Occasional travel and overnight stays may be required.

Physical Requirements: Low physical risk. Work involves sitting, standing, and extensive computer use, with flexibility to take regular breaks.

Role Scope & Autonomy: Fully qualified professional, working independently across most aspects of the role. Manages medium to moderately complex work packages and contributes technical guidance to others. Exercises sound judgement in selecting drafting approaches, tools, and solutions within defined accountabilities.

Problem Solving & Expertise: Applies deep technical expertise to resolve complex and non‑routine drafting and engineering challenges. Takes a broad perspective, identifying patterns and opportunities for improved solutions. Communicates complex technical information clearly to varied audiences. Builds strong internal and external relationships that support delivery, cost control, and quality outcomes.

Leadership & Contribution: Shares knowledge openly, provides constructive feedback, and contributes positively to team performance and innovation.

This job description is not exhaustive and may evolve to reflect changes in organisational needs. The post holder may be required to undertake additional duties consistent with the scope and level of the role.

Qualifications: Diploma or Certificate in Mechanical Engineering, Structural Engineering, Drafting, or a related technical discipline (essential). An undergraduate degree in engineering or a related field, combined with broad and relevant industry experience, is highly regarded. Equivalent combinations of education, training, and extensive practical experience will be considered. Formal technical education underpins the Draughtsperson’s ability to understand engineering intent, apply standards correctly, and produce drawings that are safe, compliant, and buildable.
