Pipefitter Worker

You will serve as a PIPEFITTER WORKER in the PUBLIC WORKS DIR of NAVFAC ENGINEERING CMD MID-ATLANTIC.

Duties

• You will connect fresh-water hoses from pier to demineralizing and pure water making equipment.
• You will open and close valves on the pier, and ensure hose connection from equipment to pier side ship/submarine.
• You will conduct pressurized tests on steam hoses on test rack at W-6 for leaks.
• You will prepare bad hoses for salvage and good hoses for future use.

Requirements

• You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
• This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites.
• You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.

Qualifications

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

• Installing, modifying, and repairing high-pressure piping systems and equipment, including steam-heating and steam-generation systems, hydraulic systems, steam generators, flash and expansion tanks, condensate, vacuum, and circulating pumps, and radiators;
• Planning and laying out complex piping installations by interpreting building plans, blueprints, and sketches, and determining routing, placement, pitch, elevation, pressure reduction, expansion, and operational requirements for a wide variety of piping systems;
• Setting up system routes, cut and place openings, install hangers for proper pitch and elevation, and determine the correct combination of risers, flexible branches, expansion joints, pumps, gauges, and pressure regulators needed to support system pressures and ensure proper operation;
• Joining, sealing, and testing systems for proper pressure, flow, circulation, and leak-free performance, as well as determining correct pipe, joint, and valve sizes to support system demands;
• Understanding of how relief valves, check valves, pressure regulators, and expansion joints operate to control pressure changes, flow, and expansion within high-pressure systems;
• Understanding of shop mathematics to lay out angles, arcs, and circles, and in using tools such as sliding squares, measuring tapes, dividers, chalk lines, plumb bobs, templates, grinders, flangers, and hand and power pipe threaders and cutters.
