As part of the National Operations Flood Risk Services Team, you will support data improvement programmes that help us sustainably manage NRW-managed flood risk assets. Your work will contribute directly to reduce the risk to people and communities from flooding and coastal erosion.

You will work as part of a supportive national team, alongside experienced Flood Risk Management (FRM) asset specialists and operational colleagues across Wales. With guidance and mentoring, you'll help ensure our asset data is accurate, reliable and fit for purpose, developing your technical skills while gaining valuable insight into how flood risk management is delivered in practice.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Helping to organise and deliver work packages within the national asset management programme.
  • Carrying out tasks using the AMX Flood database.
  • Maintaining and updating GIS datasets.
  • Supporting operational teams by analysis to inform site inspections, asset condition assessments and programme delivery.
  • Contributing to technical advice, programme monitoring and reporting as your experience grows.

This is a data and evidence driven role that blends technical learning with real-world impact. It is ideal for someone early in their career who enjoys working with data, is keen to build their skills in asset management and GIS, and wants to develop within a multi-disciplined organisation that values learning and professional growth.

We are committed to flexible working and supporting your development. You will be part of a dispersed team based across Wales and contracted to the nearest NRW office to your home. A suitable hybrid working pattern will be agreed on appointment, with face-to-face team/departmental meetings planned in advance (approximately 3 to 4 times a year). Training, support and opportunities to build your experience will be provided as you settle into the role.

Natural Resources Wales is an evidence-based organisation that depends on high-quality data to guide decision-making. The National Flood Risk Services team supports Operational teams with policy and systems guidance. We manage our flood risk assets using AMX Flood, a structured SQL-based database with a user-friendly interface that supports inspections, maintenance planning, investment decisions, and public safety risk management. Reliable data is essential for understanding the condition of our assets and planning future investment. This role plays a key part in identifying and delivering data improvements, supporting our national data plans and ensuring we make informed, strategic decisions for flood risk management across Wales.

  • Interact with colleagues across NRW to promote consistent industry and specialist subject practices.
  • Undertake health and safety duties and responsibilities appropriate to the post.
  • Be committed to Natural Resources Wales Equal Opportunities and Diversity Policy.
  • Be committed to your own development through the effective use of your personal development plan (known as Sgwrs).
  • Required to take part in incident response activities.
  • Any other reasonable duties requested commensurate with the grade of this role.

Your qualifications, experience, knowledge and skills:

  • Hold a recognised qualification in data management, computing or engineering or equivalent experience.
  • Experience of working with large data sets in data management environments.
  • Experience of interrogating SQL database tables (or equivalent) and analysing trends, gaps, identifying errors and presenting these to colleagues.
  • An understanding of asset management principles, an awareness of flood risk assets and the flood risk management sector in Wales.
  • Analytical thinking skills, and experience of using data analysis tools e.g. Excel, Power BI and others.
  • A thorough understanding of computer systems and applications.

Welsh Language level requirements:

  • Essential: Level A1 - Entry level Welsh language levels.
