We care for more than 80 million objects spanning billions of years and welcome more than five million visitors annually and 16 million visits to our website. Today the Museum is more relevant and influential than ever. By attracting people from a range of backgrounds to work for us, we can continue to look at the world with fresh eyes and find new ways of doing things. We employ 1100 staff in a variety of roles, all united by our vision of a future where people and planet thrive. We need everyone to have the passion and drive to help us with our mission to create advocates for our planet and inspire millions to care about the natural world.

Diversity and inclusion matter to us.

Our vision is of a future where both people and the planet thrive. Diversity is one of our core values and we strive to build a workplace where everyone feels a sense of belonging. All new staff who join us learn about the importance of diversity and inclusion to the Museum and how to contribute to creating an inclusive environment. We know we have more to do, but we are committed to ensuring that everyone who works at the Museum feels they can thrive and feel valued and respected.

About The Role

The Natural History Museum at Tring, Hertfordshire, set within beautiful Victorian galleries, gardens and grounds, welcomes over 145,000 visitors each year; from young children and school groups to lifelong natural history enthusiasts. We pride ourselves on delivering an outstanding visitor experience, and our Visitor Assistants are at the heart of making that happen. As a Visitor Assistant, no two days are the same. You’ll be part of a small, supportive team helping to create a welcoming, enjoyable and safe environment for every visitor. From opening and closing the Museum, to greeting visitors, answering questions and bringing the galleries to life through conversation, you’ll play a key role in shaping each visitor’s experience. You’ll also help open the museum at the beginning of the day, support school group visits, assist with events, and contribute to our retail offer in the Museum shop. Alongside this, you’ll be part of ensuring the safety of our visitors, including supporting emergency procedures when required. This is a hands-on, varied role where your enthusiasm and teamwork will make a real difference every day. Rota pattern is working 15 days over a 3-week pattern, including 2 out of 3 weekends and some bank holidays. The pattern may change to suit the operation of the Museum, with an appropriate period of notice given.

About You

Do you enjoy working with people and creating memorable experiences? If you’re passionate about delivering excellent customer service in a unique and inspiring environment, this could be the role for you. You’ll bring experience of working in a customer-facing role, along with strong communication and interpersonal skills. You enjoy engaging with a wide range of people, from families and school groups to specialist visitors, and take pride in making everyone feel welcome. If you thrive in a fast-paced, varied environment, you’ll fit right in. You’re organised, proactive and able to juggle different tasks, while always maintaining a positive, professional approach. You’re a team player who is happy to follow procedures, support colleagues and take initiative when needed. An interest in natural history or heritage would be a bonus, but most importantly, you bring enthusiasm, curiosity and a genuine desire to create a great experience for every visitor. There’s never been a better time to join us. With the Museum more popular than ever, this is a fantastic opportunity to be part of something truly special. If you’re motivated and eager to make a difference for our visitors, and you’re ready to be part of a team that shares the wonder of the natural world every day, we’d love to hear from you.
