We have an exciting opportunity for a Functional Skills Tutor role at Glasshouse College, a provision located in Wollaston, Stourbridge which specialises in delivering a unique and innovative Practical Skills Therapeutic Education (PSTE) curriculum.

Salary: Full Time Equivalent Salary: £35,619 – £36,896

Hours: 40 hours / 37 weeks

Job Description:

Tutor, Functional Skills 40 hours per week, 37 weeks per year Actual Salary Range £29,068 – £30,110 per annum (Starting salary offered will be subject to qualifications) Full Time Equivalent Salary: £35,619 – £36,896 with increased earning potential up to FTE £41,759 upon completion of internal courses and length of service.

Glasshouse College reflects the history of the Stourbridge glassmaking district. The local traditions of glassblowing, etching and engraving provide a rich stimulus for the college’s signature craft. Our students also attend other craft workshops including green woodwork, blacksmithing and textiles. Glasshouse College is part of Ruskin Mill Trust. Established in 1984, Ruskin Mill Trust is an educational charity that operates in England, Scotland and Wales. We offer exciting outdoor learning environments, utilising practical land and craft activities to support the development of work and life skills in young people with autistic spectrum conditions and other learning differences. Our research‑led method, Practical Skills Therapeutic Education, is inspired by the work of Rudolf Steiner, John Ruskin and William Morris. Working with hand, head, heart and place, Ruskin Mill Trust helps individuals to re‑imagine their potential.

The post holder will be working with a team of experienced functional skills tutors to provide excellent development of literacy and numeracy skills for learners. You will be required to deliver high quality functional skills tuition, which meets the needs of the individual students, both in line with external requirements and our unique method of Practical Skills Therapeutic Education.

To undertake this position successfully you must:

  • Have a teaching qualification such as Cert Ed, PGCE, DTLLS.
  • Ideally have at least a Level 5 subject specialism in English and/or maths (or have a willingness to undertake further subject specific accreditation).
  • Possess the ability to teach functional skills English and maths ideally from Pre‑entry – Level 1 to Level 2 (including GCSE).
  • Have knowledge and practice of assessing functional skills and supporting people with specific learning difficulties (such as dyslexia) and must have skill in working with learners with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).
  • Have experience of working in an education setting and possess a high degree of personal resilience and emotional intelligence.

Main Duties:

  • To assess, plan and deliver functional skills in numeracy and literacy, and where required, GCSE English or maths to students on an individual or small group basis according to their individual learning needs and requirements.
  • To work alongside tutors and students in craft and practical subjects to embed functional skills.
  • To work as a part of the functional skills team to develop a high‑quality functional skills programme within the college.
  • To be a part of the ongoing assessment of students’ learning needs and to make reasonable adjustments as required minimising barriers to learning and achievement.
  • To be flexible in working across college sites including two days per week at our satellite provision Argent College, located in the New Standard Works building in the heart of Birmingham’s vibrant Jewellery Quarter.
