Job Purpose

The Military (Mil) ATC Specialist is a key role within the Transformation, Strategy & Development department, responsible for sustaining and developing Mil ATM systems in accordance with NATS business objectives and contractual obligations. This role holds responsibility for ensuring the correct definition and implementation of the solutions delivered by NATS in support of the Future Mil Area Radar Services (FMARS) Contract. The role interacts with all areas of NATS to ensure MOD requirements are met and systems are developed.

Accountabilities

  • Project Management
    • Provide ATM expert guidance to support development, delivery and sustainment of ATM systems, Airspace strategies and Mil operational procedures.
    • Ensure projects impacting ATC are correctly implemented and technical solutions meet their needs.
    • Act as the Mil ATC focal point/Work Package Manager leading ATM development tasks.
    • Manage MOD change into projects ensuring decisions are communicated and accepted.
    • Represent the customer in relevant activities, with derogation to make decisions on their behalf.
    • Identify risk, creating mitigation plans.
    • Manage dependency agreements detailed in individual projects.
  • Requirements Management, Procedures & Development
    • Drive High-Level Requirements Specifications for projects affecting the MOD.
    • Represent the end user to ensure correct derivation of user requirements assisting in implement action.
    • Own Mil Strategic Project Requirements managing their validation/verification.
    • Guide managers on procedures system functionality to support provision of the Mil ATM operation.
    • Assist in development of Methods of Operation (MOps) and procedures to support functional changes.
    • Development of use cases and simulations during requirement capture, Concept of Operations, MOps derivation and validation processes.
  • Training & User Acceptance
    • Assess training needs prior to introduction of new system functionality.
    • Design and deliver effective briefings, familiarisation and assist training activities.
    • Accountable for MOD User Acceptance activities specifically for new procurements.
  • Safety, Contract Management & Transition
    • Provide ATM expertise to Airspace safety activities, analysis relating to ATM systems and mitigation on potential risks.
    • Support transition into service of new ATM systems upgrade.
    • Liaison between NATS & MOD for day-to-day operational issues.

Qualifications, Experience, Skills & Personal Qualities

  • Previous Mil ATCO experience and a detailed understanding of the mil area radar operation and NATS ATC System knowledge.
  • Able to apply experience of project management to the maintenance of current and development of future ATC systems, and/or an equivalent qualification (APM PMQ, MSP, Prince 2 etc).
  • Proficient in contributing to technical forums whilst using influencing skills to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Skilled in all forms of communication, able to tailor information to a target audience.
  • Able to self-motivate, take the lead and work autonomously to deliver positive outcomes.
  • Excellent time management, capable of working under pressure to a high standard and meet critical deadlines.
