As a Platform Engineer on our SAS Grid on Cloud platform, you will be responsible for the day-to-day management of Nationwide’s newest SAS Grid platform, running on Microsoft Azure. You’ll work within a team to ensure delivery of maintenance tasks, respond to incidents raised by our users and deliver a backlog of enhancements to the platform. You will help ensure that the capability remains fit-for-purpose for our users. Additionally, once up and running you will be providing on-call support out of hours. We are happy to consider flexible working approaches to help you perform at your best.

At Nationwide we offer hybrid working wherever possible. More rewarding relationships are supported through our hybrid approach, bringing colleagues together across our UK wide estate, whilst also supporting generous access to home working. We value our time in the office to solve problems, to learn, and to feel connected. For this job you'll spend at least two days per week, or if part time you'll spend 40% of your working time, based at our Swindon office.

Responsibilities:

  • Reporting to the SAS Platform Engineer Lead for Cloud, you’ll be part of a small team of engineering colleagues, maintaining the Infrastructure as Code solution built in Microsoft Azure.
  • A typical day might see you testing changes in our development environment and seeing those changes through change controls into production.
  • It might also see you building SAS code, shell scripts, or using Ansible to automate administration tasks.
  • You will monitor the platform and respond to incidents, user queries and stakeholder questions.
  • Ensuring that we maintain trust from our userbase by running post-incident reviews for any issues so that the platform remains resilient and working with third parties where appropriate.

About you:

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Azure, and knowledge of Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools and CI/CD capabilities, namely Terraform, Ansible, git and Azure DevOps.
  • Familiarity with SAS either as a user or as a platform administrator, supporting SAS services, and automating tasks on the platform to reduce ongoing manual effort.
  • Experience working in a Linux/UNIX environment, familiar with bash and knowledge of how to customise a Linux server to meet your needs.
  • Other relevant IT experience (monitoring, software development, agile practices, other programming languages etc.).
  • Be a technical innovator with a curious mindset and a thirst for knowledge and be able to demonstrate a drive for continual improvement.
  • Excellent communication skills, bringing to life complex problems and root cause analyses to audiences of varying seniority or technical background.
  • Have a curious mindset and thirst for learning.

Our customer first behaviours put customers and members at the heart of how we work together:

  • Feel what customers feel - We step into our customers’ shoes, using their feedback and insights to empathise with them and to understand their needs.
  • Say it straight - We are brave in speaking out and saying what we think – we’re honest and direct with good intent.
  • Push for better - We don’t settle for mediocrity, we challenge the status quo, taking responsibility for continuous improvement and personal development.
  • Get it done - We prioritise what will have the greatest impact, we are decisive, and we take accountability for delivering brilliant customer outcomes.

You can strengthen your application by showing how our customer first behaviours resonate with you, and where you may have already demonstrated these.

The extras you’ll get:

  • 25 days holiday, pro rata.
  • Access to private medical insurance.
  • A highly competitive pension to help you build a strong foundation for retirement.
  • Access to an annual performance-related bonus.
  • Training and development to help you progress your career.
  • A great selection of additional benefits through our salary sacrifice scheme.
  • Life assurance to provide peace of mind for you and your loved ones in the event of your death.
