We’re looking for a Payments Portfolio Manager to play a critical role in how demand flows into Payments and how our change portfolio is governed, prioritised and managed. This role sits within our Demand & Engagement function, working closely with customer journey teams, delivery, technology, architecture and finance to ensure demand is well-defined, outcomes-focused and decision-ready. You will provide the structure, transparency and insight required to manage a complex, high-value portfolio—helping leaders stay focused on the right work, at the right time.
We are happy to consider flexible working approaches to help you perform at your best. At Nationwide we offer hybrid working wherever possible. More rewarding relationships are supported through our hybrid approach, bringing colleagues together across our UK wide estate, whilst also supporting generous access to home working. We value our time in the office to solve problems, to learn, and to feel connected. For this job you'll spend at least two days per week, or if part time you'll spend 40% of your working time, based at either our Swindon or London office.
If your application is successful, your hiring manager will provide further details on how this works. You can also find out more about our approach to hybrid working here. Nationwide is committed to the redeployment of our employees impacted by change, as such applications for redeployment candidates will be prioritised in this recruitment process. If you’re a colleague on long-term absence (for example, on parental leave) or a temporary worker, please use your personal email address to submit an application.
Responsibilities
As a Payment Portfolio Manager, you will support the efficient running of the Demand & Engagement process ensuring new demand is clearly defined, assessed and aligned to agreed prioritisation criteria. You will facilitate the intake, triage and evaluation of demand, providing high-quality inputs into governance and decision forums. You will also coordinate and assure the impact assessments, ensuring scope, cost, risk, dependencies and capacity implications are clearly understood before work enters the backlog. The role requires maintaining an accurate, end-to-end view of the Payments portfolio, including in-flight initiatives, pipeline demand, dependencies and constraints. You will need to support prioritisation conversations by providing the data, structure and insight required for effective decision-making. You will act as a key interface between business stakeholders, delivery teams, architecture and finance.
To succeed in this role, you will need to ensure adherence to agreed governance, standards and controls across the portfolio, while also identifying, managing and escalating risks, issues and cross-initiative dependencies. You will use modern tooling and application of AI to produce high-quality MI and improve productivity, decision quality and portfolio insight. Furthermore, you will be required to drive continuous improvement in ways of working, reporting, tooling and automation.
About you
We’re looking for someone who is highly organised, proactive and comfortable operating in a complex, fast-paced change environment. You’ll bring:
- A strong understanding of the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) and how ideas move from concept through to delivery
- Proven experience in portfolio, demand or PMO-type roles within complex change environments
- Exceptional knowledge of demand management, portfolio governance and MI/reporting
- Experience working in financial services (payments or other regulated domains desirable, but not essential)
- Proven ability to operate credibly in ambiguous environments and influence outcomes at pace
- Excellent communication skills, with confidence engaging delivery teams and senior stakeholders
- Proven analytical skills, attention to detail and a focus on data quality
- The ability to work across multiple initiatives, programmes and value streams simultaneously

- Say it straight - We are brave in speaking out and saying what we think – we’re honest and direct with good intent, openly sharing diverse perspectives to reach the best conclusions and using language everyone can understand
- Push for better - We don’t settle for mediocrity, we challenge the status quo, taking responsibility for continuous improvement and personal development
- Get it done - We prioritise what will have the greatest impact, we are decisive, and we take accountability for delivering brilliant customer outcomes
You can strengthen your application by showing how our customer first behaviours resonate with you, and where you may have already demonstrated these.
